Remember? Nixon did it. Probably Henry Kissinger's idea. Thanks, Wank. Um, I mean....Hank. 😳
Seems like even Reagan, who I admired, did it.
Clinton sure did it. Blatantly. Just before he was dragged crying from the whitehouse he planned a seemingly unnecessary trip to china. People in his own party tried to dissuade him. Foreign leaders harumphed the suddenly-arranged visit. It was unseemly. There was no good explanation for it. Why do it?
Everyone was baffled by it. He had only recently returned from China. He was dead set to go to back to China and...hang around? He just went and came right back, if memory serves. I figured at the time that he was jonesing to go and get the last four digits of that Swiss bank account. He sure earned it.
Now we have Geo W Bush flitting off to asia. Why? Usually they hang a label on presidential trips. (Economic Summit, Peace for all Mankind, vacation, something.) They should label this trip Run Awaaaaaay!!!! phbbbt!
He'll hit Kyoto...now what would he be doing in Kyoto. Excuse me, this just makes me want to barf. ...
OK, better. 😀 He will make a pilgrimage to Kyoto to stab our country in the back...somehow. His credo: Only after Hell freezes over will I ever do anything in the interests of the United States.
He will go to China....... ooh! I got it - they will probably give him a box of aircraft parts left over from that surveillance aircraft they knocked down early in his treason, er, his administration.
With steely resolve (not) he intimated how he would slap those Chinamen into line and not settle for less than getting our airplane back, and we did get it back, in boxes. At least thats the last word I can recall about it.
We were going to get our state-of-the-art (obsolete in one day) surveillance aircraft back, or had got it back, in boxes. Great. Guess that'll show 'em. We did get our crew back, eventually. Does anyone even remember they held our crew hostage?
Is it not amusing when people say how hostile the press is toward The Pretzel-Wrestler. (If he had been in any better physical condition, gasp, he might have succumbed to the mysterious assault of that vicious pretzel. Haw!) Coverage of the debacles created by our political class as they "work hard for the American People" drops off the table and viola!, the next big whoop story.
Public opinion is "managed", you know? Come to think of it - don't they even PAY members of the press to say nice things about them? WTBF???
Is it any wonder that Yvgeny Primakov, formerly head of the Russian successor-organization to the KGB (let's just call it the KGB) and presently overpaid head of Internal Security for the Dept of Homeland Security, was heard to muse to another former KGB general officer now working for Homeland Blahblahblah, ~ "In the KGB we only dreamed of exercising the CONTROL over the Russian People which (the American govt) has over the American People." (Thats a paraphrase but its pretty close I think.)
Strayed from the topic for a moment there: why do they all go to china? I wonder.

And I agree with invigorate.
Imagine when he gets to Kyoto:
"Gee, this place rings a bell...wasn't there a treaty or something...I was going to sign...at one point...but then, what happened....I came to power...yes...I remember that...and something about oil companies too...and lots of money...then the treaty?....Oh Goddamit...I forget...Pass me that Cigar boyo...."
