It's a real mystery to me. I live in London, house prices in the last decade have gone through the roof! I have never owned a property, now that i want to i find that i'll need to find about £200,000. Why so much? Well, PROFIT seems to be the main reason. Houses are a great way to make yourself rich, buy one (or two or three, etc..) and you can sell them at a huge mark up a couple of years later...
->BECAUSE THERE AREN'T ENOUPH OF THEM.<-
This is all well and good, i live in a capitalist society, it is to be expected. However, because i live in a capitalist society, my employer pays me as little as possible (fair enouph ehh, wouldn't you say, i mean how else are they going to maximise profits???).
The result is i have to rent a place. Because the house prices are so high, there are a lot of people who can't afford them, hence there are a crap load of people looking to rent a house/flat/room/box. This forces the prices up. It is now the case that it costs more per month to rent a room than it does to pay the average morgage per month. This knocks on and removes all possibility of your 'renter' ever becoming an 'owner'.
What the F*%£!!
If i was born into money, i would be ok. I'm not born into money, so i'm not ok, AND PROBABLY NEVER WILL BE! Slavery was abolished centuries ago (in the UK it was anyway...) yet here we are, all slaves to our own greed! We want a system that allows us to get rich, but how many of us actually make it?? I personally have no ambition to be a millionaire. I don't want to climb over the dead bodies of my fellow countrymen. Yet here we are, gradually edging towards a society that is completely geared towards self interest. I don't want to bring children into this mess of a system.
Soon the working hours directive will be introduced. This means i will only be allowed to work 'x' amount of hours per week/month. Sounds Great (Britain has the longest hours in Europe, i think i work most of them), unfortunately this means i'll probably become un-employed.
My company is bringing in 300 East Europeans to make up the numbers when this event happens. Now, instead of raising the pay of the people who do my job (so they can afford to live on less hours) and hiring more people (because this regulation means that the 100 people who currently do the job will need to become 200 because each man can only work so many hours), they will simply keep the wages the same, and hire more people at no extra cost to the company. FANTASTIC!!! 'Well done boys, we almost had to pay people a working wage for a minute there!'. To really rub it in, they will be providing rooms for these men (yes, you heard right. If you're actually a citizen of this country, you have to pay your own damn rent!), which basically means a lot of poor Englishman, cleaning the shoes of a handfull of rich F*"%ers who put their own selfish interests first (like they were all taught in school, go to the head of the class, etc...).
Can someone please point me in the direction of a place where i can live and work and not have to deal with all this shit??!!! Please, i beg you. Perhaps if someone does know, you should PM me (if it's that's great, we don't want everyone knowing about it, ayy 😉)
supply and demand.
If you want a cheaper house, move out of the city.
**edit
Thought i would add, i live in the country, and an apartment costs about $500 US a month. If i were to go to New York City, decent 1 bedroom apartments range between 1500-2000 a month. See a difference? But, on the other hand, in my profession, i can make 30k-40k a year in small towns as opposed to 70k-120k in a city(after i get my degree)

I say this, not to be rude, but as i'm a naturalist and put the continuing existence of life on earth over my own existence (yawn . 😴). I'd really like to teach actually, but there's no profit in it 😞
you can live in the country and work in the city. Just got a longer drive ahead of you. i drive and hour and a half to and from work every day, and i only loose about 60 bucks in gas a week as opposed to $300 more paid weekly(not to mention tuition reimbursement)
Part of the reason supply and demand is getting so out of whack is not only that the population is rising, but that people are living in smaller households. Once upon a time people often lived with their extended families, now we all want a place of our own (where we can, um, be glued to a computer screen and play chess...)
Also, death is quite expensive. You looked at the price of coffins and funerals lately? 🙄

Forgive me for bleeding my heart out into cyberspace, i just long for normal existence were i don't have to work my balls off to support the extravagant life styles of the few. I'd feel contented earning a crust and giving my free time to make myself and others around me happy. As it is i find myself stuck in a perpetual state of work with no reward, were i never see my family or friends, and to boot i don't have any hope of that ever improving because everyone is so caught up in their material needs. It depresses me deeply.
if you are wanting to shut out your lively hood for the greater good(like it would make much of a difference), then be happy doing so from a rented room in the ghetto, and otherwise quit whining about it.
EDIT: BTW

Missionary, that's hilarious! I lost it a little earlier when i started this thread. I resigned my job, finished today.
choose something you enjoy and then look to exploit it.
house prices won't move significantly over the next three years, by which time your salary might be enough to borrow enough to buy somehwere.
then you will give £200k to a bank over the 20 years, your testicles will be in the hand of the governeor of the bank of england, at the end of it you'll have to sell it to afford to live with the current state of pensions and rent into your old age.
