Sharon has decided to clear the Gaza strip and some parts of the East Bank. The Israeli settlers are furious and outraged. They call their former ally a traitor now. Sharon is determined to make the steps that will eventually lead to continuing the negotiations on the basis of the so called "Road Map".
What do you think ? Will Sharon succeed where others have failed ? Will he eventually give in to the settler's threats ? .... or will he be assassinated by fanatical Jewish religious extremists ?
Originally posted by PullhardYeah, and they are not even negotiating the road map yet at this moment.
He must try. I can't see a solution without the Isralis evacuating some settlements.
Security level around Sharon is skyhigh at the moment. If they, the religious fanatics, get a chance they'll kill him.
Originally posted by ivanhoeWell it's certainly a good question, but if by "succeed" you mean bring peace to that particular conflict, then I have to say No.

This ain't about land. One side's Jewish, one side's not. Unless that changes they'll just keep blowing each other up.

I am from Isarel and it is the main subject on the news. I think he will fail because Israeli people will never do as they are told unless America gets involved.
Do you mean the settlers will refuse to move and he won't be able to force them?

Thank you for your post. This is interesting to me. What do you mean that the US needs to get involved?
Isn't it the view of most that just the opposite holds a better chance of success? That the US just needs to butt out of it?
I just can't see how the US or any outside force can affect what is a fight for two ancient homelands.

This is so wrong that it hurts. Sorry Joe. I'm just frustrated. Why is this the problem of the US? Because Truman sided with Ben Gurion?

I wasn't alive to make the decision before the event, so I am only mildly invested in this question. As I study it, I would much rather have avoided invading Palestine to Create Zion. But I wasn't there so that has no importance.
Now, as things ARE -- as the Universe has handed us -- I wonder why the US has to stand as the guilty party?
And that is what saying "It is up to the US." says should the Israeli's and Palistinians fail. That ain't fair. Not logical.
