Here’s a bit from Bill Maher’s latest TV show. Notice the uncomfortable laughter from the audience:
Well, I’m probably as hard-core left as they come. However, never have I ever actually seriously been called politically correct. I’m not; if it wasn’t for automod and the pandering to the meek, I’d be a lot more unfiltered than I am as well.
And in this, I agree with Bill as he states it in his piece: this woke “reckoning” that’s going on is attrocious. People getting sacked because they made jokes, as comedians!!!, more than 20 years ago?
Cultural appropriation? Never have I heard such bloody madness. And yes, everytime I write “bloody”, you should exchange it for some good old anglo-saxon version of shagging.
Not allowed to black face? How the hell am I supposed to go to a Halloween or something like Jules from Pulp Fiction?
I don’t know who started this fingerpointing and wagging, but it has got to stop. It’s ridiculous.
People do not have the right to not be insulted.
Surfing is whitewashing Hawaiian culture? Jesus H. Christ that is moronic!
Seriously. How the “bloody” is the left supposed to criticise the right, when we come away with such utter nonsense?
It hives alt-right mother-bloodies a rightious stick to hit us with.
How am I supposed to argue that stealing resources is evil, when they can just laugh it off as another example of cultural appropriation and cancel culture. Mixing up true nastiness with this made up woke rubbish and the left losing the distinction being made?
Someone has got to stop it. I blame social media.
These morons have to get out of the bedroom, get shot at, beat up, raped, drunk, make a 4km free fall, diarrhea through India for a couple of months and bury a loved one… live a little… then, and only then, should they be allowed to form an opinion.
And then it won’t be how milk is raping cattle, Samual L. jackson in a kilt is cultural appropriation or how it’s okay for adults to be protected from nasty concepts like swearing.
Grrrrrr
I agree with wholeheartedly with Mahar, woke culture is utterly ridiculous. In fact, I hate the term "woke".
Promoting progressive views and tolerance should not mean chucking reason and common sense out the window. Not all jokes, including tasteless ones, amount to hate speech. And no one is sinless.
That said, there are instances where someone should be rightfully fired for something found in their past; a crime, a history of harassment, something like that. Bigoted statements are a tough one, because those aren't attitudes that just go away. If you hated Jews 20 years ago, chances are you're not much different now. If an anti-Semitic joke is hateful enough, it's not just a joke.
But again, I agree with Mahar about the examples in this video (with the caveat that I haven't heard the holocaust joke he mentioned). The guy fired for admitting to bullying as a kid? That was idiotic.
"Cultural appropriation" is supposed to mean disrespectful use of a foreign culture. But lately, it's come to mean "any use of something from a culture you're not from".
Sports teams with names like "Redskins" with cartoonish depictions of Native Americans would be cultural appropriation. Surfing? No.
George Carlin once had a bit about rape jokes. His point was that anything can be funny, whether jokes about race, rape, whatever, depending on where the focus of the punchline is.
Carlin then gave an example of a young man who was convicted of raping an 80-year-old woman. Carlin's punchline? "WHY?!" Why would you bother wasting your time that way?
The joke didn't mock the victim nor did it justify or downplay the severity of rape; it just mocked the absurdity of the act. If Carlin was still around, I'd object to people trying to cancel him based on that.
@shavixmir saidlove this post, but note that I have often heard it said, " the problem with the " left " is they don't know how far left they are supposed to go", like its a race for some to be more left. left does not seem to know when it has gone to far, when to stop etc. Your view on this matches mine.

@jimmac saidThat's an interesting quote. Worth thinking about.
"the problem with the " left " is they don't know how far left they are supposed to go",
I would just add that annoying moralistic outrage isn't "left". Conservatives, for the longest time, were the ones crying about sex in movies, racy music videos, women in revealing clothes, vulgar jokes by comedians like Carlin, etc.
@vivify saidExactly. The right whines a lot. And they cancel culture.

My problem (besides my problems with the right) is the left doing it too.
@shavixmir saidI should've said whining isn't "just" left.
Exactly. The right whines a lot. And they cancel culture.

But I agree, it's aggravating when left does it.
@shavixmir said - ""Not allowed to black face? How the hell am I supposed to go to a Halloween or something like Jules from Pulp Fiction?"
But you could put rouge on your face and call yourself Alice and they won't accuse you of cultural appropriation.
Feel the fukking breeze!

A trait I find admirable Shav!
if it wasn’t for automod and the pandering to the meek, I’d be a lot more unfiltered than I am as well.
You don't have to be unfiltered Shav. The right wing loonies here are doing your job for you. Their posts are so juvenile, and display their incompetence so perfectly, just an occasional polite comment by you will prove your point. 🙂
This again.
It's the internet. All kinds of people have access to it, with all kinds of views. They have a platform and can shout from it. That doesn't make them a "culture". The majority votes with their wallets. No cancel movement has ever canceled someone who is actually popular.
And since when do you equate cancel culture with the left? Why? The right looks to cancel stuff just as much. More? Who cares.
Maher does what he does best. He takes molehills and makes mountains out of them. He is a comedian (and a crappy human being but that's a side note) looking to get a few laughs. Maybe the reason you heard uncomfortable laughter from the audience was because he actually wasn't funny 😀 Do you think a lot of "sensitive snowflakes" go into Maher's audience, knowing the material Maher does? Do you think it's actually the audience's fault or maybe Maher has been pushing his luck for a while now?
@shavixmir saidThe stupidest thing about Cultural 'Appropriation' is that it's usually claimed by people speaking English, wearing Serge de Nîmes, and drinking latte or Chardonnay. I might take them slightly more seriously if they stuck to Igbo, burnouses and cow's blood instead of constantly appropriating European culture.
Cultural appropriation? Never have I heard such bloody madness. And yes, everytime I write “bloody”, you should exchange it for some good old anglo-saxon version of shagging.
@jimmac saidFrankly, that's more a problem with the USA than with the left. Your right wing is also on a death trek to Magaland, while Europe's left is rather more varied. Fabianism would never catch on in the States, for example.

@shavixmir saidHow does right cancel culture. Hvent heard that one.

@averagejoe1 saidwhat the poster is doing here is redirecting…a common tactic with leftist.
How does right cancel culture. Hvent heard that one.
when caught they look into the headlights and start spewing shyt out of their mouths…true or not, doesnt matter
@averagejoe1 saidYou’ve not?
How does right cancel culture. Hvent heard that one.
- Cancelling abortions?
- Cancelling albums because of “Satanic” lyrics?
- Drugs.
- mcCarthy hearings
- Election results
- science
The list is spectacularly endless.
