There was an actual scientific discussion about that issue and the gist was the little barbs were WAY to specific to have been engineered because our genetic science is WAY too fresh and new to come anywhere NEAR the ability to engineer a virus into that shape. It would involve a number of experiments like in the trillions to get even close and the gist of that is it was already here, as much as Canucks and other rightwingers want to blame China and if it was, it kinda backfired pretty spectacularly because if it was an engineering project the idea would be to foist it on an ENEMY not their own selves who just as it happened were the first to die from it so that theory has been thoroughly debunked.
Maybe in another couple hundred years of genetic scientific development, assuming our civilization is around long enough to HAVE a 200 or 300 year span without a nuclear war or some such, enough time to actually be able to invent deadly diseases in a lab but right now, it is like genetics is in around 3rd grade and we need it to be up to Phd level to weaponize some random virus.

That's a strawman argument. Nobody is claiming that humans engineered the virus from scratch.

But it's highly likely that gain of function testing in Wuhan made an existing virus more transmissible in humans and that this was the origin of covid.
