So my boss and I were talking about the collection of freaks former President Bill Clinton assembled for his first cabinet and the subject gradually shifted to the genetic wonders one could find on the midway. I reminisced that in the good ole days, the State Fair of Texas had a wonderful ballyhoo full of freaks. Since then, the Fair has cleaned up its act and tried to give the appearance of being family friendly, although the rides, concessions and midway games are still run by carneys who are missing teeth and smell like cabbage. Anyway, one attraction I used to enjoy was the Ape-Woman. You’d pay your money, go into the tent with the other rubes, and watch some girl in a bikini get locked in a cage and transformed into a man-eating gorilla! No foolin’ – she’d break out of the cage and run around until a policeman (obviously a plant, but this is still high concept for all the ham and eggers) shot the gorilla dead. Aflush with memories of my misspent youth, I turned to google to see if any nostalgic soul had built a webpage in honor of the Ape-Woman. No sooner had I typed in my search, than I came across the strange tale of Zana, the real Ape-Woman. Enjoy:

I would like to have the origin of Zana debated. Is she a Neanderthal or an Alma?

Sorry - my telepathic powers missed that.

Far too little info to make a decision. That legend could be false or highly twisted over time a la the "telephone game".

If true, one possibility is that she had hypertrichosis and because of it wasn't properly raised and became a "feral child".

As a matter of fact I am an ape-woman.
No one pays me 2 cents for my postings.
And only a few ppl has offered to pay my subscription to RHP.
To be honest, I prefer to see the zoo from outside.... 😛

It comes as little surprise that you enjoyed the freak shows. I'm sure being around people with
unusual conditions than you made you feel super by comparison.
