you know it would be really funny if it turned out that the switch hasn't really been made yet and that this is all a placebo effect 😀
What you were experiencing was the server at a very light load. The site performance
will always be lightning fast with the hardware we have (or had) when very few people are on the site.
The problem we had was the number of concurrent users browsing around the site at peak times. (General rule, weekend usage is about 50% of weekday usage. Site is busiest when the UK gets to work until the US goes home from work – Friday being the worst. No great surprises there.)
The new servers are live now – but we have made one other change that will be a huge boost to dial up users. All the pages are compressed before being sent down the wire – and then uncompressed by your browser. Some tournament pages (200k normally) go over the wire at about 8k!!!!! (Graphics are compressed anyway – and are also cached)
There is a negative effect on the web server performance doing this, and some of you will notice that most pages no longer render bit by bit. There is a short delay – and the page is there! But, the saving on bandwidth will be immense. (and faster servers generally mean more clicks, and therefore more bandwidth costs) So, I hope this new (to us) compression technique works out ok
Anyway, it has been an interesting week. Not least today, when the site was down, my PC was misbehaving, I was very tired – and them my wife says she ‘has had contractions’. I was close to stress overload!!!! 😕 But, nothing yet, I’ll be sure to let you all know what “Mini-me” number 2 is when it happens.
And thanks to everyone for the patience during the downtime. (and to Chris, who I woke up this morning with a phone call, urging him back to his keyboard as early as possible.)
