What are the details on this? Is there a word limit? I don't get what the topics indicate.

750 word limit and the topic is loose so writers can go in any direction they like. Nature can be about animals etc or human nature etc

Will the penalty for going over the word limit be harsh?

I mean, yeah the penalty for a 30,000 word manifesto could be righteously harsh, but what about 1000 words?

And I asked this before, but what software do people use that keeps track of words?

Not a fan of Word or Office, I'd just use Notepad if it counted words.

If it's only slightly over i wouldnt be incurring a penalty - if over like 900 words or so i would just cut it off at the end - or send it back saying too big 🙂

I would say do what you need to do, the rules be damned.

Yeah, I know, I'm looking into add-ons I can snap into Notepad or Wordpad, actually.

I'll share if I find a good one.

Notepad++ is an awesome plain-text editor that can do word counts.

Get it here:
http://notepad-plus-plus.org/download/v6.2.3.html

You'll need to add the TextFX plug-in. (Plugins->Plugin Manager->Show Plugin Manager and install "TextFX Characters" ). Restart Notepad++, and you can get the word count of any block of selected text with TextFX->TextFX Tools->Word Count.
