Use notepad or wordpad as usual, then use Select All, Copy'n'Paste (or ctrl-A, ctrl-C, ctrl-V if you prefer) into the box on http://wordcounttool.net/ or any of the others available - http://www.javascriptkit.com/script/script2/countwords.shtml or http://www.countofwords.com/ . No new software to learn, just a browser bookmark.

You'll need to add the TextFX plug-in. (Plugins->Plugin Manager->Show Plugin Manager and install "TextFX Characters" ). Restart Notepad++, and you can get the word count of any block of selected text with TextFX->TextFX Tools->Word Count.
I already had Notepad++, so I just downloaded and installed the TextFX plugin. It works great.
