No need for apps or Word. Use notepad or wordpad as usual, then use Select All, Copy'n'Paste (or ctrl-A, ctrl-C, ctrl-V if you prefer) into the box on http://wordcounttool.net/ or any of the others available - http://www.javascriptkit.com/script/script2/countwords.shtml or http://www.countofwords.com/ . No new software to learn, just a browser bookmark.

Now that's awesome. You deserve an RHP medal of recognition for bringing that to our attention.

Actually, using Word (no idea why people hate it so much) is the easiest method of all. You just open it, type some words, and it already has the word count shown at the bottom of the screen.

Notepad++ is an awesome plain-text editor that can do word counts.

Get it here:
http://notepad-plus-plus.org/download/v6.2.3.html

You'll need to add the TextFX plug-in. (Plugins->Plugin Manager->Show Plugin Manager and install "TextFX Characters" ). Restart Notepad++, and you can get the word count of any block of selected text with TextFX->TextFX Tools->Word Count.
Thanks, SG.

I already had Notepad++, so I just downloaded and installed the TextFX plugin. It works great.

I have a question.

Must this work be entirely original?

Yes, I understand we cannot plagiarize. I mean what about works inspired by other, more well-known works?

Can I just say, as a regular poster here for 6-7 years, I always feel totally alienated by the annual Prose Competition, year after year. I've never ever considered entering. It always seems so cliquey, so General Forum. A whole bunch of GF people just start posting on the Culture Forum all of a sudden. They don't really engage anyone who posts there. And they are not Debate Forum people. I could never really work out why you don't just announce it on the General Forum rather than pretend it is for the populace of any other forums.

I'm entering. I never set foot in the general forum.

I was told to post in the culture forum with this by general forum regulars ( I post in both so general forumers stay over there and culture forumers can stay in this one if they wish to) whatever I do seems to be wrong lol

Well that's good. I am not even for one minute suggesting that people should not enter the competition.

This is a common feeling, often brought about by others who criticize yet do not act. You have taken the reins of this project year after year, and for that you should be proud of the opportunity to showcase those who wish to participate. Let the critics talk. It is people like you who truly have the ear of the masses.

Speaking of critics, you lost me with your second sentence. Should he be proud of the opportunity, proud to showcase the entries or proud because he takes the reins? I sincerely hope you will be proof-reading your formal entry for the sake of the critics who must scrutinize them. It is a competition after all.
