1. Because I was always to big for sports

2. Because it's more fun to confuse jocks than it is to deal with them.

3. Because not leaving my chair for hours on end is actually encouraged.

My little brother was 6!

He worked out a lot of things on his own, like smothered mate, mate with the rook, discovered attacks etc.

My daddy taught me the moves.. and always use to beat me.. when I was very young 5-8 roughly I dont know cant remember that well.. Then played a little at school chess club (kept me out of trouble).. I can remember a kid there always use to play london system opening.. I can even remember him explaining a few things about it... then erm.. stopped playing for years but have taken it back up.. and now whooooop my daddy.... he dont even like to play me now heheh.. last game we had the other night I made a right mess of his defense.. and force him to castle behide it..push a pawn though slipped in the gaps I created.. put his queen in defense.. pushed the pawn further and force exchange between the queens (mine was hanging off the pawn) so instantly got it back..my dad has played french defense for as long as I can remember.. likes to bring his queen and bishop out very early.. but game we had prior to the last one I was able to pawn fork it the pair.. hehe thinks he can still take advantage like that.. use to play my best friend alot when i was younger he liked to fianchetto both his bishops.. he was better than me at the time.. bit older too.. shame I dont see him no more.. cant get revenge..

I was taught by my mother, and she was merciless. I can beat her easily now, and we hardly ever play anymore.

think i got into it because you dont have to talk, even to girls, you could say that is what you are doing alone in bedroom, and the bullys in the yard never saw me at school, boy i hated thos teen years.

I was an all-star quarterback in highschool, but I just couldn't get the chicks y'know? One day I heard two cheerleaders talking, went something like this "OMG, did you see that smothered mate Billy put on Bob?" "O yeah, he's *such* a hottie!" Sounded kinda off to me, but what the heck? After I figured out they were talking about chess and not wrestling, I checked out the chess club and MAN, those guys got the babes! So, I signed up and the rest is history ...

Reality check: taught moves by big brother. Found out a little kid can have fun beating big brother and his friends (worth an occasional wedgie)
Hadn't played for many years before finding this place-I seem to have mostly forgotten how to play, but it's a good time-waster.
