Why? I thought you were into that sort of thing. That, and 4' 9'' Japanese tarts.

No... I know you wouldn't get what I meant because you haven't reached that stage yet, but funny you should mention it.
In one tourney, this one guy from my school was going to the bathroom during the break, and this little kid ran in and puked all over him... he was obviously not amused 😉

Arc13,

You gave him some very bad advice! If a digital clock is used then 5 minutes is subtracted from the time! You CANNOT play a game with the standard time controls using a standard clock and THEN request a digital clock! SHEESH! You must not be active in tournament play, eh? 😲
It's a new alternative to the insuficient losing chances rule. If it's determined that you have insuficient losing chances, but have very little time (this was the case in Wildfire's game), TD's will either award you a draw, or give you a digital clock will 5 minutes, 5 second time delay to finish the game. The latter option is now prefered.

Think a great deal of it.

The time was set at 20 minutes per player, and notation was optional.
So notation was optional .. and you lost a game on time because of the time spent writing it down ... who's fault is that? ;-)

If this was a Swiss system tournament, you would have probably got easier opponents in later rounds thanks to losing your first round match anyway.

It was a Swiss style tournament, and I faced weaker players than I would have if I hadn't lost my first game.

let's face it, a 30-minute game implies a time-shortage situation most of the time. i assume that your opponents in the games you won faced time pressure too. i personally don't play 30-minute time control games.

I know what you mean, kinda. 2 nationals ago I arrived on friday with a first round bye and won every game up until the last one. In the last round, I was up 1 or 2 pawns and if I won I would've gotten 2nd place by myself. But I got greedy and went for more pawns. Ended up drawing and tieing for 2nd but got 7th or 8th on tiebreaks. Still pretty pissed at myself for screwing that up. Maybe this year.
