6) an orange on a fence post at dusk on a rainy evening in April near a flowering purple bush. This fence separates Farmer Brown's land from the local housing development. The fence stands 12 feet high, and can only be climbed from Farmer Brown's side.
Farmer Brown did not place the orange there, he has no idea how it got there or what it might mean. He is very suspicious of the orange, had someone been on his side of the fence and climbed the fence only to place an orange on the fence post? They would have needed to climb through the purple flowering bush yet it looks undisturbed.
Farmer Brown returns to his home for diner. As he eats he could see the orange on the fence post as chain lightning illuminates the sky. Why is it there? What does it mean? After diner her found it hard to relax, yet all the same fell asleep in his arm chair while reading The Farmer's Almanac.
The next day Farmer Brown all but forgot about the orange on the fence post because his cows had somehow gotten out of the pen and wouldn't return for their milking.
The days turned into years and Farmer Brown passed on. The Farm stood vacant for some years, when finally a newly married couple purchased the house. There was a lot to fix up and to clean up, and they almost didn't buy the house.
While the wife was out in back, there near a purple flowering bush was a beautiful orange tree growing up from behind it. Why would a farmer plant an orange tree behind a flowering bush right up against a fence? She showed her husband and he was also baffled.
"You know what dear, I always wanted an orange tree when I was a kid. Let's buy this house". Her husband just smiled as they stood watching the sun set behind the orange tree.
