When do we get the answer?
Well, the Chinese aren't the only ones who use chopsticks. The Koreans do, too, as well as the Japanese. There's probably other countries as well. That still probably doesn't get us to 40% though.

What if you include the huge Chinese diaspora in the States and everywhere else (and Korean/whoever else the chopstick users are)?

I still think it's genitalia...

How about something like comb, or hairbrush? Think 40% of the world uses one? It would be similar to razor in the sense that they are both used for personal hygene.

Well, you said the closest answer was razor, but does that mean it is similar to a razor or that razor is the closest percent wise? You just said that razor was the closest answer but you did not say if it was similar to a razor.

Please explain which one it is.

Seriously doubt it would be scissors, or any kind of office tools. I have scissors, but I don't use them every day.

i think i might have the answer to this one, but i guess everyone else so far has thought that too. could it be a newspaper? i don't know if the numbers add up in some of the 3rd world countries that don't distribute newspapers everywhere, but it could definitely be a possibility. yes, i think i will go with newspapers. any responses to that one?

Apologies for the confusion. Razor was the closest guess there had been up to that point, where closest means similar in either use, design or (I'm guessing) location of use (ie bathroom) and not in terms of it being closest in terms of percent. Note that whilst they said razor had been the closest, they also said that it wasn't 'sizzling hot'. Make of that what you will.

Guesses today have included 'knife' and 'a bar of soap'. Neither were the answer that the presenter had down on his card! 😲

Although the link I posted earlier suggests that 'flush toilet' is not the answer, an "official" figure for 'pit toilet' was given in that article: 2.8 billion. This is a little greater than 40% of the world's population but it isn't awfully far away. Mebbe I should ring up, hope I get through and then say 'a pit toilet'! The money now stands at £1,700.

I guess the answer has to be quantifiable (albeit in some loose manner). This would suggest that hairbrush is unlikely IMO. The presenter also said that with a bit of web page searching it was possible to get the answer....

"... the utilization of drinking water resources ranks top, as only 40 percent of the world's population of 6.3 billion can acquire drinking water every day and some 25 percent have none."
