Anyone here old enough to remember the 50 mile walk craze that swept America in 1961 or so? President Kennedy made an off-hand remark that any American should be able to go out and walk 50 miles, and it became a big deal for a year or two, with 50 mile walkathons being promoted across the country.
To quote W.C.Fields, "Many people died".

No. It only lasted a year or two, but it was a big deal at the time, with different groups tring to break the record. A squad of US Marines did it in 8 1/2 hours, or something like that. I think. It's been a loooong time.

I believe it all came about about when the Commandant of the Marine Corps made it a requirement that all Marine infantrymen should be able to force-march 50 miles with full packs, then run the last 100 yards up hill and engage the enemy, or some such. JFK thought it was a cool idea and sent America on a 50 mile walk frenzy.
