I think Go appeals to some people more than chess, the way Sudoku appeals to some people more than crossword or quote decryption (my favorite)- it is more highly symbolic and I suspect it uses a more selective part of the brain. Personally, I find both Sudoku and Go to be too "dry" for me.
But then, I play a 4-dimensional version of Tetris (Frac 4D), so go figure.

That chess would be more popular if it was easier, is that what the majority of chess players think!!! I think the major reason that it retains the popularity that it possess is precisely because of its un-easiness, thoughts?
Next time give us a site to back your evidence up...
Originally posted by PhlabibitThey are similar, but not the same. In Go, you capture pieces when you have blocked all lines touching your opponents piece - the simplest example is of a solitary black stone in the centre of the board, if it gets surrounded by 4 white stones at the 4 compass points then it is captured and is removed from the game.
Is go also known as othello? Please don't answer with a yes or no, I want more info than that.
P-
In othello, pieces are not removed, but change colour and it is only concerned with linear play - a line of black pieces can be captured by placing a white piece at either end, then all those black pieces turn white.
There are more differences but this is the essential one. Overall, both games are won by having more of your colour on the board than you opponent at the end.
Originally posted by SerendipityI think chess is perfect as it is, and I wouldn't have it any other way. Of course I enjoy variants from time to time but the regular game does the trick for me. In my opinion, the basic rules are quite simple when you take into account that the number of different games is tremendous.
