i know someone who lives in the countryside (not a farm though) who has 3 cats, one of them, in fact all of them turned up somewhere at some point as strays but one of them in the middle of a city and it's the one of the 3 that will go out and hunt, bring back birds and mice etc, he does eat them... even fish from their neighbors pond, would dive in (i presume) and clean out their pond. the other 2 do nothing, in fact if it had the choice one of them would live in doors all the time living the lazy fat cat life. cats are funny.

I sometimes #$% with my cats by withholding their food for a few days to see if they can still catch their own food.
They seem quite adept at catching birds, but you are right - they seem to shun mouse.

My wife had me put up a bird feeder a few summers ago, but I had to take it down after the second time we had seeds all over our house when the cats slaughtered another take-out dinner. Seems we had merely built them a drive-through...
