Yes, I'm a little upset with my keyboard as well! It keeps doing things
that my mind didn't communicate to my fingers. LOL

Sorry about the blank post! Hit the wrong key...

Anyway, I'm getting a little upset, and here's the scenerio....

I have several games in progress, and all are waiting for my
opponents to make their next move. That doesn't upset me.

What upsets me is that I have been sitting here watching one of my
opponents making several moves in several other games for a couple
of hours, and I haven't had a single move in my game with that
person during that time.

Should I be upset, or am I over-reacting? I don't believe my game
with this person is overly complex and shouldn't require a great deal
of extra analysis, or anything.

Any thoughts out there?

Regards, Marc

my humble opinion: you should not be upset about that. There can
be many reasons why two players make several moves in a row. And
there can be many reasons why someone wants to defer a bit to
make a move in a particular game.

To be honest, I also don't follow the timing sequence in most of my
playing sessions.

I suggest not to follow too closely the 'moving behaviour' of your
opponents, certainly not as long as they are well within the TO limits.

Sin.

In this case they were playing in several of their other games, three or
four different opponents at least. Not just one.

Anyway, I took care of it and now I'm over it...

Marc...I am the worst at this...I have games where I am
teaching...and ones that are for fun...and ones that are against some
of the top players....sometimes I will move in my teaching games 3 or
4 times a day....while the others just sit. I wait to make sure I have
enough reflection time on these to make sure I can make the best
move.

I am sure I have probably offended a few doing this but hey...I have
7 days...and that is the contract they entered into.

Heck some days I won't even move...just sit in the forums and run my
mouth....but I always look at my games and think before I make a
move...Alekhine taught us "When you see a good move..sit on your
hands..look for a better one"

Those words have made me alot better at chess.

I experienced the same thing in a game that is still in progress-- I
was starting to hope he/she was going to time out, because I was
down in material, but then I checked this person's other games and
moves had been made in the other games just about every day, while
my game sat untouched for a few days. And I'll admit, I got a little
annoyed. It was NOT a complex position. Then I figured, perhaps
the other games were simply more interesting to this person, while
mine was not quite as thrilling. In any case, as others have said, I
reached the conclusion that if they agreed to a 7-day limit, then they
had every right to take all seven days. And I am hoping that I will still
come out on the winning end of this one-- it is still a possibility.

As a person who does exactly what you talk about, and does it often,
let me explain some of the reasons I do it.

Basically there are often moments in all my games when I want to sit
down and think about it, work things out on the board, and get a
much better feel of where the game could go. So when I really really
want to sit down and look over a game, that game actually gets stuck
on the shelf, so to speak, until I can find a nice clear spot of time to
set it up on a board and work through things. And the reason I want to
sit down and think about it can be diverse; maybe its a position that is
going to lead to a bunch of trades and a radically reorganized game.
And othertimes its a game in that, for me, is in a state of "a million
things to do, none of which seem any better than any other."

Other times, a game is at a certain level of -what to call it -
"emotional tension" - maybe - that I want to resolve, for good or ill,
before thinking about my other games, and so I focus on that game,
keep it set up on a board, trying to get through whatever the tension
is till I feel comfortable again (And "comfortable" about a game
includes reaching a point in the game where I realize "yup, I'm going
to go down in flames.&quot😉

Then again, there are times when things are going according to "plan"
(I didn't necessarily say a good plan, now did I? Grin grin.) in a game,
so I don't have to sit down and reevaluate the game, so moves go
quickly.

Also, I've at rare times caught an opponent "live" at the board - quite
fun, especially when we are across an ocean, and then the game
becomes much more like an OTB game, where I'm just waiting for
their next move, not checking other games at all.

Anyways, I guess all I'm trying to say is there are many reasons that I
don't move in a particular game while I move in others. And in no way
is it supposed to be an insult to opponents whose games I am
(temporarily) ignoring. Indeed, I'd argue if I am being slow in a
game, my opponent should take that as a compliment, because in
general it means I want/need MORE TIME to think through that game.

Make any sense?

makes a lot of sense to me Michael. I recognize all your arguments from my experience.

OK folks, I see now that I shouldn't have been upset about this.
Thanks for the replys here in the forum, and to those of you who
contacted me by e-mail! (Sorry if I didn't get replys out to all the e-
mails.)

I guess we're all "individuals", and as such have differing ways of
playing the games we currently have on our active list. Just because I
happen to handle my games in a certain way doesn't mean that
anyone else does it the same way.

Sorry for any unrest or discontent this may have stirred up.

regards, Marc
