Buried deep within so much recent bad news was a piece that didn't even get notice in any American newspaper's first section. Today, Westinghouse and Southern Nuclear signed the first contract for a new nuclear plant in the United States in over 30 years. Westinghouse sold two AP1000 nuclear plants today. In the very recent past, two other utilites have signed Letters Of Intent with Westinghouse, and contracts will be in place with them in the near future.

This means that tens of thousands of high-paying, skilled jobs - welders, ironworkers, electricians - in fact, any trade you can think of - as well as a demand for manufacturing jobs that only a very few companies - most of them in the US - are here to stay. For engineers, for tradesmen, and for many professions supporting them, prosperous times are ahead, regardless of what the headlines say.

The CEO of Westinghouse said it best: "The dawn of the nuclear renaissance arrived today." There is cause for hope, folks.

Just another target...guy.

I know you see great jobs and all that yadda yadda yadda.

But we're living in strange time where bombs the size of a suitcase
can level cities.
Another nuclear plant is just another target.

We can harness other forms of energy.
The sun, the ocean, the wind...etc......

But whatever, what the hell do I know?

Possessing detailed knowledge of nuclear power plants, and in particular, their safety and deterrent systems, I can assure you: nuclear plants in the Western hemisphere are, shall we say, 'resistant' to attack.

The AP1000s that will be constructed here in the US (eight look likely) will be a part - perhaps a big part - of what returns America to what we always admired: bountiful work, manufacturing prowess, a return to optimism, and at long last, if not environmental leadership, we'll no longer be laggards.
