If in a game. A player Says mate in 2 .and they dont suceed. Must they throw the Game?
if they mean i'll give you a checkmate mate in 2 moves mate.. and his other mate agrees, then thats a valid verbal contract.. and the game must get thrown out.. not on the floor, or outta the window. but on the mate that challenged his mate for a checkmate in 2..
now where is my coffee.. mate..
NAH! They don't do they?
It is funny though when someone pompously declares mate only to look stupid.
Happened to me ... first league game, I said "mate", guy interposed a piece .... oops ... I had red face ... people laughed ... chess players so cruel etc.
The good thing was the second time I said "mate" in that game I got it right ... I was checkmated. So, GO me!

The WORST is when you think you've got mate, and then you post a message to your opponent saying "Good game!" and then you make your move...only to find out that it's NOT mate, and that you just accidentally sacrificed your queen.
Not that I've ever done that.
I enjoy that - gets a better response than an after game PM.
