I see bits and pieces of football (soccer) matches and I never quite know what I should be looking for. I'm sure I can read a primer on the game and get the 'facts' about it, but what I'd like to know, from a fan's point of view, is just what makes football so special. I'd like to become a fan because the game is so loved around the world. Must be something to the game or else why would it be so wildly popular, right?

Can you fans enlighten me?

Even just a few words about football's allure will help. Thanks!

Also, football is special in England because we all love fighting each other and it gives us something to start an argument about.

It's calmed down a little bit lately though!

It's an utterly pointless and dull game in which the players have replaced brain power with foot technique. For some reason they get payed millions of punds to do this and become more famous than Einstein or Mozart. Being a fan generally involves drinking, shouting, singing, singing whilst drunk, shouting whilst drunk and drinking whilst drunk. Oh and eating pies.

To be a footballer you should be rich, good looking, and sleep with as many people as possible, then when interviewed you should try and place as many idiotic phrases as you can into one sentence, and say 'umm' or 'know what I mean' in all the others at least 10 times. You must also cry and roll around a lot every time someone touches yu on the field.

For some unbeknownst reason it is popular, possibly because it requires very little intelligence to understand and is easy to watch whilst drinking. It is also popular for confusing pride in one's country with pride in a team of overpayed, simpletons running in cirlces after a white sphere and falling over a lot.

You may have guessed I'm not a fan 🙂

Well, from what I gather from both your perspectives is that it's absolutely no different than American football. 😀

my team recently won there first trophy in their history, what a day it was, when the goals went in i felt with one with my fellow supporters. excitement, fear, anger, stress, dread, anxiety, euphoria, happiness, relief
all emotions i felt in 90 minutes of football, not every game is like this granted but when they are special, boy are they good.

Rather watch some proper sport like rugby and cricket.
You won't be disappointed!

Especially if it's the Leeds Rhinos!

I can't wait for the Bulldogs game in the Carnegie Challenge..

R.L. is definitely the way forward in sport.

My word. And it's definitely nice to see you guys giving us a real run for our money this last year or two. Some stiff competition in the international scene will do wonders for the state of RL everywhere.

Rugby I can agree with. Had a foreign (not sure where, but british accent) gym teacher in high school. Had us play rugby instead of football. Just good game and much better to watch.

But cricket? watched it a few times, puts me to sleep everytime. I'm glad that show it at night in the US 😵

You're right about the R.L. "up north" dyl. However, don't you guys put more money per person into sport than any other country in the world? Particularly at grass roots level.
Even though I hate the National Lottery over here for giving everyone false hope of riches, I can agree that it has had a definite and positive effect on sport.

St Nick. Cricket is just like baseball, without all the really complicated stats and figures!

Well, I learned a basic understanding of it, but it just seemed to have no excitement to it and each game last forever...

I don't watch baseball either for the same reason 🙂

I have a team that I follow, but I just look up the score after the game is over, so I don't have to waste 3 hours of my day being bored.

I used to watch a lot of cricket when I was skiving school. I'm so sad, I used to sit out in the garden watching the t.v. through the window and listening to "Test Match Special" on the radio so I could hear what was going on.....

However, I actually prefer so called minority sports, like most of the extreme sports, and stuff like Archery, Clay Pigeon Shooting and Ten Pin Bowling. To reiterate my "sadish-ness" I also once stayed up until 3.30 am to watch the final of the World Ten Pin Bowling Championships.

Unfortunately, in this country, if you don't have Satellite or Cable, you rarely get to see ANY sport, except for highlights.
