The giant Airbus A380 made its maiden flight today from Toulouse, France.

Cool.

Is Richard Branson not planning on putting malls and jacuzzis in a few of them?

I remember hearing that there were similair plans (although not quite as extensive) for earlier big airliners, but then they decided to just cram loads more seats in instead to maximise profits.

A new era or more of the same? For most flights the maximum number of passengers will be crammed on board, so the seat sizes will remain similar to those of today.

Speed-wise, there will be no major improvement, and its range will not allow a single leg e.g. London -> Sydney.

I sometimes wonder why, in the technologically mature environment we live in, we can't build passenger aircraft that deliver cost-neutral improvements in either seat size, speed or range (or all three?)...

Or is it because the single driver is to minimise the cost of air travel to the end user? Perhaps a dismal scientist can enlighten me?

The single driver is to reduce cost to the airline.

Actually I think there is more like 3 pilots to control that plane, IDK, I only fly small planes

It should be popular in high-volume areas like the Far East.

Apparently it will 'normally' carry around 550 passengers but is capable of carrying 880 (I think)!

Just how long will it take to load that sucker with 550 plus passengers? Jeeze it`s bad enough already on a normal plane.

880 passengers on one plane!! that has got to be better for the environment, than 4 planes carrying 220 passengers.
