Step one in AA is to admit you are powerless. OMFG could you design a bigger fail plan.
I think the original intent of AA was to replace addiction to (dependence on) alcohol with addiction to God, which really means, addiction to whoever was running the group. It's a transfer of power, but not not a transfer of power to the addict. However, this may be the best the addict can expect.
