I hope Villeneuve gets it right, or at least wrong in a stimulating way, especially the part about grooming a leader to take advantage of the previous cultivation of the populace to become a certain group's favored leader (not that it's the only aspect of the novel). Plus, what happens when the leader you have been cultivating completely outgrows your organization's control?
I mostly like Lynch's version, except for the scene where Baron Harkonnen humps the young orchid guy after pulling his heart-plug. I nearly walked out of the theater at that point. I think that scene might have been cut from later edits.
In 1965, I wonder what Herbert might have had in mind re: the meaning of spice, whether he was thinking of oil or mindshare, or more generally whatever sine qua non of whatever society in whatever time.
As some might know, Frank Herbert shopped Dune around to a bunch of publishers, all of whom turned him down. Dune was published in 1965 by Chiltons, not a literary or even popular-fiction publisher, but instead generally known for their car-maintenance manuals.

@badradger saidThe first book was fine. The sequels, not so much. The non-Frank sequels, not at all.
the book was almost as bad as the film
The film was 'nice attempt, but not quite'.
The new film, I can't be bothered anymore, the tie-in telly series even less.

Like Wow, Kev. You sure delved into that. May I remind you there are the slo-mo's in here, like me, that don't even know
about the book you are referring to. But that's Ok, carry on, little bro.
@earl-of-trumps saidI mainly look at pictures. Does the book contain a lot of pictures? 🙂

I loved the book and have read it several times over the years. It is a great sci-fi coming of age story with great geopolitical and ecological backstories. I found the first movie so disgusting that I couldn't watch all of it. I was very disappointed by the focus
on the most revolting aspect of the bad guys. I've hopes that this new movies will be at least watchable and somewhat true to the original story.

@gambrel saidI didn't even know we had a Dune Clan here. 🙂
I thought this was about the clan Dune.
And I wondered which person out of the two was being picked on.

@very-rusty saidYes, our old pal Don founded it. His nick here was Arrakis, which was a planet in the book if I'm not mistaken.

@gambrel saidSo is he one of the two in Dune here? I remember Dune Team on another site only to well as do you!

I thought he was a rather kind hearted nice guy, if only for his issues, who knows we both may still be there. Well I still am as I have a life time membership. I understand you left the site?
