mutual masturbation, or the wish for it; father-murder and mom-mating.
Of course freud is a joke but he might be on to something anyway
obviously there is a sexual element to chess based on the obvious
symbology of the game

I thought it was the king you mated and the queen you wanted to kill? Or is that why I keep losing?

I've been told the term to "mate" comes from Arabic "the king is dead" sounding something like "hyash maart" which has become "check mate". Apart from that I thought the game was designed/developed to teach generals about attack and defence..?

on the topic of Rueben Fine, i recall Larry Evans once mentioned that Fine's classic endbook book, Basic Chess Endings, was compiled in only a few weeks !

If it was Arabic, there'd be an 'al' in it somewhere. I heard it came from the Persian (aka Farsi and Iranian) 'shah mat' or something like that, what with 'Shah' being Persian for 'the king'.

Clarification: Having stumbled across http://www.goddesschess.com/chessays/shahmatjan.html, it appears that 'shah mat' actually means 'the king is rendered helpless', which is closer to what actually happens in chess (after all, you don't actually take or 'kill' the king).
