I could never really understand why people are sentimental about horses, except perhaps that they were so valuable for transport before we had cars that eating them would be pretty stupid. Now, though, they are fair game.
Except I'm vegetarian so I wouldn't 🙂
I had a friend whoo tried to be vegetarian but he didn't know about taking protein pills and stuff and was in hospital in under a week! 🙁

I dunno. Maybe it effects different people in different ways. I suppose it invovles what you eat, not including meat. I don't know.

You don't need to take protein supplements as a vegetarian if you know specifically what to eat that gives you "complete" protein. There are uncounted millions of unhospitalized vegetarians and vegans!

Your body needs 21 different types of amino acids to operate efficiently. Your body can make 12 of them (I don't know from what or how, though. Where is mcguido when you need him?), but you must get the other nine from high-protein food sources. If, as a vegetarian, you eat a wide variety of vegetables and unprocessed grains, with some potatoes and beans mixed with rice thrown in, you will get all the protein you need.

Do you know what was in your hospitalized friend's diet?

He didn't eat salad, don't know what unproccesed grains are, ate potatoes, didn't like beans although didn't mind baked beans. Didn't eat rice but ate pasta. Had a very funny diet if you asked me. Allergic to this, didn't like that, hyperactive with that one! 🙄

I suppose if you are a 'meat and two veg' person and then just stop eating meat you might have some problems.
It's been a while since I looked into it, but I recall that Vitamin B12 is present in only tiny quantities in non-animal sources. There are some green veges that have it and maybe some nuts, but one of the best sources is Marmite (or Vegemite if you are Australian). Although I have heard that some people find this absolutely revolting 🙂

Well, you don't need too much B12, to my recollection, to be healthy. Just a few micrograms is enough. Any fortified, whole wheat-based, breakfast cereal a couple times a week should provide you with enough.

I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong. 🙂 (don't have the time to do an extensive net search at work...)

Yes, you need very little B12. And you don't need to worry about it unless you're vegan (don't eat any meat, dairy, eggs, etc.) because you'll get PLENTY of B12 if you have even a little bit of dairy in your diet. If you don't eat dairy, there's plenty of B12-fortified cereals and other products or you could take a regular vitamin once a month or so.

It's extremely simple to be a vegetarian. Just eat a varied diet and you'll be fine. You don't have to worry about counting amino acids and such (unless you have a lot of allergy problems or something). Food like soy (found in soymilk, tofu, tempeh, veggieburgers, etc.) have all amino acids needed by humans.

To have actually been hospitalized within a week he must've consumed nothing but chips and beer 😵, or it was purely coincidental to his trying vegetarianism.

I forgot to address this last month. Now that the thread has been revived...

Salami is actually a seasoned combination of pork and beef. I think you can also get it without the pork. I don't know of a specific name for horse meat. Equilami, perhaps? 😀
