Sounds like he was able to jump overboard a second time at nightfall and navy seals were ready, flippers flapping🙂

why aren't countries using their navy to escort ships?

If I was a business man, i'd buy up some gun ships and run a ship protection business. These shipping companies would pay a nice amount for some protection!

Who's with me?

Perhaps a percentage of the pirates will now say "Oooooohhh, wait a minute, these guys are playing for keeps. Maybe we should find another game.

LOL! No they won't, they'll probably just have itchier trigger fingers now.
These guys aren't scared to pay the price.

Sure, the MIGHTY US of A could wipe the current pirates out if they sent their navy in there, but that wouldn't stop the conveyor belt of poverty stricken guys there trying their luck at piracy and a the possibility of a better life.

That's great history.

Still does not change the fact that Somali pirates won't be cowed by any american show of force.

The situation is hardly similar. At that time, the pirates operated with the permission and assistance of the local governments and treaties could be forced upon those leaders effectively ending the vast majority of (government sponsored) piracies.

There is no effective government in Somalia today (thanks largely to Western meddling). Therefore, the pirates are just criminal gangs. Absent some sort of convoy system (which is hardly practicable given the vast amounts of shipping that goes through the area), there is little that military operations can do to end this type of piracy.

Not to worry. The US will get sucked in, by either the UN or a bunch of tin horned African dictators, to invading Somalia's main land, or air strikes against the pirates on shore. We'll kill innocents in the process and the world will hate us even more. No sense for the US to be the Policeman in this situation. It's every country for themselves. Yes #one, the US is responsible for these pirates in the first place.....right? No way Obama will get involved in this!

I agree. There needs to be a viable government in place. Surely that would be cheaper and more effective?

How can that going to happen, though?

Guess the African nations will have to solve that problem. The US will just make it worse. Maybe the Chinese could be of some help.

There was a government in place. Unfortunately, it was too Islamic for the West. There is no likelihood that a government will come to power in Somalia that is pro-Western. So the West needs to adjust its thinking as regards the acceptability of an Islamic government which might be willing to crack down on the piracy as part of a treaty.

Simple solution...just send a decoy ship that is fully armed down the pike once in a while. Once they see that the possibility of having one of their little boats being blown to smithereens is real, there might be a little hesitation on attacking the next one. They have already stated that all American and French ships are fair game from now on.....so its Game On.
