Weird Al calls all the artists and asks permission before using the song. It means a lot to have your song parodied by him, and they are happy to give in.

Perhaps he started doing that after Coolio threatened to kill him for making fun of his song "Gangsta's Paradise". Coolio said that song means too much to make fun of and was very upset for some time. Not sure where you can read about it, I saw it on a Behind the Music or some other show.
