So, what do people think about rhb's idea to have a "Words" round? I like the idea, although I don't think I have any pictures for it so far. But if we have the round after all the others, there's plenty of time for everybody to take some word pictures.

The idea of having the comp get people to go out and shoot and post.. we want to encourage people into photography. If we style the rounds around what people have or haven't got in a tin at home there's no point.

I'm not into words or abc game photos etc
Name an emotion and let people capture it..that would be fine.

Try making the rounds about photographic catagories....

Colour
Abstract
Still Life
Urban Nature
Events
Hipoints (high contrast)
etc

These group leave a lot ope to the mind and stimulate photo art.

To me, this competition is basically about showing each other pictures and talking about them for a bit. If a certain topic makes you go out and shoot some pictures that's great, but if you take a ten year old photograph out of the drawer and enter that one, that's fine too. I wouldn't mind choosing a certain topic because someone happens to have some pictures ready.

I actually like the suggestion of a 'words' round. It's one of those topics that leaves a lot of room to interpret. I'd be interested to see what kind of pictures will send in for that one.

I do think we need to decide on the upcoming round though. This was Ragnoraks list after the B&W round:
10. Kids
11. Urban
12. Humour
13. Chess
14. Still Life
15. Extended Exposure
16. Movement/Motion
17. Home (can be in your home, or just in the locallity that u would regard as home)
18. People
19. Best of the Best.

Are we gonna do the kids round?

The kids round will be merged with the people round. We can still have it as the next round, if nobody protests. I would like to keep all the other rounds (maybe leaving out "Best of the Best", if we continue with the competition). Maybe Ragnorak could say what exactly he had in mind with "Still Life" - I already got some pictures for that round, and they are not at all what I would have expected for that round, so obviously "Still Life" can mean different things to different people.

I'd say we go through the rounds Ragnorak has set up, and if enough people are interested in continuing, we can set up some new rounds.

Thanks for writing what the competition is about for you and what you think about a "Words" round, now all I need to say is "I agree completely". 😉

Still Life does exactly what it says on the tin. A non-animate object(s). That's it. Just like the paintings, except in photos.

I also agree with DdV's point about the comp. My brain draws a blank on the words round though, but I'd be happy to think some more on it, if it is made a round.

Yes, that's what I was thinking about. If you look at Still Life pictures, they are usually (always? ) inside, and arranged. At least two of the pictures I got (or you got and forwarded to me) don't seem to fit into the category.

As for the "Words" round, I see a lot of possibilities there, from a picture of someone reading the newspaper to big three-dimensional neon letters photographed from an odd angle.

I wish I could get this level of agreement on something I say in real life too. I've had some tough meetings last week 🙂

Maybe we shouldn't try to pin down what 'still life' means either, and leave it up to everybody's own discretion on what (s)he considers a still life. I usually try to take the topic into consideration when voting and I guess everyone does that to a certain extent, so anyone who enters an image that has no relation to the assignement would probably not get much votes or attention. And as with the possible words round, it could be interesting to see what people consider to be a still life.

So, with the people and kids categories merged, is urban the next round? Or people?

That's just the problem. If we don't pin down what the rounds are about, it's impossible to predict what others will put into it, so one might end up with some great pictures which don't get many votes because most people have a different idea about the subject. This happened to a degree in the "Natural Light" round, which Ragnorak actually had defined pretty well, but not everybody had seen the definition. I don't mean we necessarily have to narrow it down very much, but I think we should be clear about what's not included. (Sorry to disagree with you. 😉 )

I'd say "People" (that's what I meant when I said: "We can still have it as the next round, if nobody protests." )

Well, you got a point, so that's ok. And I knew it wouldn't last 😉

Ah ok, I wasn't sure. Despite being terribly uncomfortable while taking pictures of people, I do have some pictures for the people round.

Ah well, there we agree again. 😉 That's why I seldom do it. Still, when I do, the pictures sometimes turn out pretty well, so I might have something for that round, too (if the people who are on the pictures give their permission). And taking pictures of children is a bit different, I enjoy that.

I love street and social photography as a genre, but I only once could bring myself to try it myself. I went ok, the pictures were allright and I didn't get punched in the face by someone who absolutely didn't want to be photographed, but I couldn't yet gather enough courage to try it again.
I haven't often photographed children yet, but I agree (😉) on photographing kids being different. They usually don't mind the camera much and seem a bit less self-conscious about it.

I updated the topic list for future reference. I'm gonna try to enter every round, but humour is gonna be a struggle I think.

10. people
11. Urban
12. Humour
13. Chess
14. Still Life
15. Extended Exposure
16. Movement/Motion
17. Home (can be in your home, or just in the locallity that u would regard as home)
18. Words (?)

I have never tried that.

"I haven't often photographed children yet"

Well, nor have I, unless you'd say about once or twice a year (when seeing my nephews and/or nieces) is often. 😉
