I just don't get it - can someone explain?

To be honest I prefered Skeeter's "Thessalonians" - very erudite.

sense less ness

take 'ness' out of the word 'sense" and you are left with the 'e' Elegant eh?

Ahh, I see. Sense - ness=e (sense less ness)
Very good

Thanks Skeeter! There's only only one thing worse than not getting the answer to a cryptic clue; not understanding the answer. I can now see it is a very fine clue.

yes please ...

For all I have figured out, you get a letter and the number of letters the word has ... and the letter given must be in the word, but I'm sure I'm missing something (damn those bottles of champagne last night !!)

It's a puzzle Faith, a cryptic one and theres a whole world of us 'cryptonians' out there. We're another culture and we use a different language. Wait till I post it and then try it, There will be plenty of help here at RHP I'm sure.

PS Edit...and you too Boris

that was a really tough one. It's easier to work backwards. The answer was 'senselessness'. Why was 'e' the clue? because iff you take the letters 'n,e,s,s' out of the word 'sense' you are left with the letter 'e'.
Therefore 'sense' with 'ness' taken away = e.
'sense' less 'ness = e

the answer is senselessness

I strugle with these for hours, and then from no where boom you hav the answer. Most infuriating

You are given a clue and the number of letters in the answer - and then with some lateral thinking you can get the answer. For example

begin road to painting (5) gives the answer START.

St is abreviation of a street which is a road and ART is a painting and finally another word for Begin is Start.

Senselessness from e(13) is much the same but split the word up into 3 words:
sense less ness

take the letters from ness out of sense and you are left with e.

This is my favourite clue but I have to admit I did not work it out I had to wait for the answer in the paper!

I hope that is slightly clearer though perhaps not🙄
