@Gertrude

German Mensa member 5439

Who would deign to join a club that selects its members based on a mere number? That would be like looking down on people because of their rating on an internet chess site.

My chess rating speaks for itself and I choose to disavow what it says. Speaking for myself, I'd estimate that I am nearer to 1600 OTB. My sister is a MENSA member and I once played chess with someone whose son got into MENSA at the seventh attempt. Enough said.

I took the test in the early 2000s. It was an online test and application. I thought the test was easy, I qualified, then it cost $150 or something like that. I was like, so if the test was made easier then more people will pay. So it made perfect sense.
I also remember the quote "I refuse to join any club that would have me as a member."- Groucho Marx

In fact all clubs are choosing their membership based on values, that could be perceived as strange.

There is not so much looking down involved (but you only have my word) than encouraging others whose experience is somewhat equal.

Sigh....

Money is not everything.
There are values besides economics.

Furthermore: At least in Germany you can get a social membership, if you can't afford a regular one (and yes it measn to document that... just in case the Donald surfaces and thinks he can have a free ride).

At the time I was living off a $400 per school quarter grant, about $170 a month. My tuition and fees were all paid. But Ramen was my typical meal. Rent was $195 a month. I worked as a telemarketer selling light bulbs, photographic sittings, circus tickets etc for $90 a week.
I eventually quit school and went back to mechanic work and meat cutting.

Took the test in 1975 at the request of a friend who didn't want to go alone. I got in, she didn't, she never spoke to me again. Went to 2 meetings, decided I was way out of my league and never went back. I'm good at IQ tests but not much else.
