All I know is you are entitled to a week for each year over the age of 21 that you have worked for the company or more if you're over 40 but I'm not sure how much. If you go to your local CAB they can tell you more.

I'd say it's a wash, your wages they owe you vs the tools you took. Hope you get unemployment dole. Is there such a thing in the UK? Don't know, I would assume so. At least you don't have to worry about losing medical benefits. When I lost my job in the IT bubble in 2000, I went to zero medical really fast unless I wanted to pay 12,000 bucks a year to keep it up, which was more than the total unemployment benefits I would have received. I was lucky, had a job lined up before Lucent/Agere went under, didn't even get a week off to lay back and drink beer🙂
What kind of tools did you confiscate? Valuable ones I hope.

Redundancy payment, cut and pasted from the CAB website.
An employee needs to show two years of continuous employment at the relevant date in order to qualify for a redundancy payment.

The amount of the statutory redundancy pay an employee is entitled to depends on his or her age, length of service and pay. Since the introduction of the Employment Equality (Age) Regulations 2006, the upper and lower age limits on service that may be counted have been removed, although the employee’s entitlement is still subject to taking into account a maximum of 20 years’ service. The employee is entitled to:

1½ weeks’ pay for each complete year’s service at or over the age of 41
1 week’s pay for each complete year’s service at or between the ages of 22 and 40 inclusive and
half a week’s pay for each complete year’s service at or under the age of 21.
For the purposes of the calculation (for dismissals taking effect on/after 1 February 2007), the amount of ‘a week’s pay’ is the employee’s actual gross weekly pay. However £330 per week is the maximum for ‘a week’s pay’ that can be taken into account.

Sell them quickly and deny ever having them they would then have to prove that you did indeed have them. Blame some corrupt official who commandeered the van from you! After all they were in there when they took the van 😉

Did you sign a contract when you started the job? If so go find it. It should have a clause in it regarding your rights when your employment with the company is ended, plus it will be vital leverage in any legal proceedings.

Also this place is an awful place to ask for advice. Head over to somewhere like the Citizens' Advice Bureau:
