As some of my opponents will know, I have a Ladybird book on
almost all subjects... my favourite at the moment is:

"The Ladybird book of vaguely Russian sounding chess openings"

😉😉😉

'Atonement' (Ian McEwan) and 'White Noise' (Don De Lillo) broke my heart and opened my mind
more than anything this year.

My personal literary gods:
Ray Bradbury-- king of them all. Greatest American writer ever, in my opinion.
John Irving
Edgar Allan Poe
Frederick Exley
Hubert Selby (Last Exit to Brooklyn, Requiem for a Dream)
Thomas Ligotti (you have to be a serious horror fan to know who he is...)
Barbara Kingsolver-- this woman should be president
Arthur Machen
Lester Bangs
Nimzo😉
I could go on all day.

Some Kafka, i've managed to read The Castle and The Trial brilliant!
What about Fyodor Dostoevsky i read Crime and Punishment a few years ago an absolute classic and i've just finished The Idiot (by the same) probably one of the greatest books that's ever been written!

fully agree about Dostoievski. For me he is all-time n°1. Only with reversed preference in the titles that you mention. I consider Crime and Punishment the best novel I have ever read. Also the Brothers Karamazov, The Idiot, and his short stories are top class.
