I'm listening to Rhythm of the Saints right now, and I just thought - does anyone know of any similar singer-songwriters with this much musical and lyrical talent? I'll have his entire back catalogue soon and I need more to listen to.

Yep.

I like: The Boy in the Bubble, Graceland, I Know What I Know, You Can Call Me Al, and Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes.

Yes, Graceland is a great album. Did you know you can buy many of his albums very cheaply from Amazon sellers? I got Rhythm of the Saints, Songs from the Capeman, and You're the One for about £10 in total including postage and packing.

I'm sure this will get flamed, but although their music sucked, I think the lyrics by the Counting Crows are great

EDIT: Leonard Cohen rocks too.

Well, I think Mr. Jones was a good tune, but maybe that's because I haven't heard it for a while. I'm looking for someone with a less affected vocal style.

Leonard Cohen? I've heard one album which is all a bit dirgey, and then on the last track he commits some terrible sin against music with this sort of scream/wail as the song fades out. That actually caused me physical pain.

'The Future' is probably his most generally accessible album, although it's not the sort of music his name generally brings to mind.

That's the only one I own; the rest I have on a track-by-track basis. Try 'A Bunch of Lonesome Heroes' and 'Joan of Arc' for a start. You're right about dirgey though; he does like his morbidity.

Leonard Cohen is great. [almost as good as Dylan] One of the favourites in this household.

Heresy 😛.

(I do actually like a lot of Dylan's stuff quite a bit.)

It seems that before I came to this thread, other had already mentioned two other poets/singers of note: Leonard Cohen and Bob Dylan. I would also add Tom Waits and Roger Waters.

All of these guys have great voices, too (although few could sing for the Mormon Tabernacle Choir).

I like all the names mentioned, also Gordon Lightfoot.

I saw Simon and Garfunkel playing live in Rome with the colosseum in the background. 600.000 people were watching and I was 30 meters from the stage. Very excellent.

The live album which came out last year is my favourite S&G album. The versions of most of the songs are brilliant, especially: "I am a rock."

Artists that sing Simon like music are: Joan Baez, Pete Seeger and him who wrote "Streets of London". They're all roughly from the same era though.
