I am making a website for my wife and she wants this dramatic opening image that morphs (fade out) to the actual site entrance/banner kind of thing.
I know I can use PHP slideshow kind of thing, but can you do a 2 image slide show and have PHP get out of the way so it does not interfere with the rest of the action on the real opening banner page? The second image, that is? So a viewer would come in, see the opener image, it morphs to the opening banner and then the view can scroll down, check out links, send email, etc. Would the slideshow thing interfere with those activities? Thanks ahead of time. I don't want to use flash animation or such so those with dial ups (strangely still semi-popular) so these things can happen with minimum delay on those slow connections.

I know it sounds like a bit of a subjective answer, but it shouldn't interfere if you build it properly.

Also, you'll probably find that the PHP Slideshow script you've got actually uses Flash or Javascript to actually do the 'slideshow' effect so you might be better off cutting out the middle-man and just building it in Flash or Javacsript. I wouldn't worry about delay or loading times when creating a Flash intro for a website, the file sizes involved are so small it won't make much of a difference.

However, if you want my honest opinion - I don't think you should bother with an introduction. Most visitors won't appreciate it and it will probably annoy any returning visitors having to see again and again.

Agreed, splash images are a waste of time and annoy more than interest.

Exactly my thought. In addition, those who do appreciate the opening image may find it annoying that it disappears before they have seen it properly.

Set a cookie. Those who have seen the image don't see it again unless they click on a link on that same page to see it again.

Still means you have to watch it once. They're bad webstandard practice.

God forbid I should see anything on the web I don't want to see. Web surfers in general aren't that prissy. Those that are have Javascript and Flash disabled anyways.

Yes they are. The whole web industry is trending towards minimalism and speed. People want quick, easy access to the information they're looking for.

Not to mention that its bad for SEO and will increase your site's bounce rate by around 20%.

You'll have to wait 20 minutes to find out the answer to that question.
