I'm looking to buy a digital camera for taking various snapshots, nothing too fancy. I'd like to get at least a 5 megapixel camera in case I want to print out 8x10 or larger pictures without noticeable loss of quality.

Anyone bought a digital camera recently that they're happy with? Any suggestions/advice?

get the best possible lens with the highest optical zoom
a camera that would accept an f/body lens would be best

digital SLR

I just bought a Fujifilm FinePix S2 Pro Digital SLR and I
[b]LOVE[b] it!

sounds like overkill. Olympus makes very good mid-range
camera's at the 5 MP level, but like he says, look for the
highest optical zoom function and the widest angle shots too.
They list "digital zoom" but that is pretty worthless after a point.
Some of them list rediculous numbers like 200X digital!
All that means is you can amplify the pic down to a single pixel,
not much use. A 10X optical is much more useful. Then you look
at stuff like how many seconds have to go by before you can take
another shot, most film cameras can take three or four shots per
second but most digital cameras its the other way around,
4 seconds per shot for the cheapies. Make sure you check out that
spec. BTW, that finepix s2 is a great camera but it has a $1600
price tag! like 12 megapixels and all the bells and whistles but I get
the funny feeling you don't want or need that one!

Thanks, y'all. I'll keep the lens and optical zoom info in mind. Yeah, 12 megapixels and $1600 is a little out my usefulness/price range. I was thinking something more like 5 megapixels and between $250-$450 Canadian. Here are a few I was considering:

HP Photosmart R707
Canon Powershot (i) A95; or (ii) S60
Sony Cybershot (any model in my price range)

Anybody like/dislike those cameras?

Try posting your question in the RHP Photo Comp, I'm sure some of the experts in there can help. I'm sure they'll find this thread though anyway.

My Mum has one of the Canon Powershot ones, I took some shots on it and was impressed. I think it was the S2 though (going on body shapes on the canon website), which may be a bit more pricey.

Good luck.

We just bought a Kodak Easyshare Z740. With a 512MB memory stick.. it came to about 550$ I think. We're happy with it, 5 Megapixel, 10X optical zoom comes in handy.. Its the optical zoom that you really want to go for.. and nothing over 5MP is required unless you are really blowing up pics into banners across a room.

edit: That was Canadian funds

10x optical zoom?!? Wow, that's insane. And for only $550? How did they price it so low? I'll have to check that one out.

Unfortunately, yeah...cross-border shopping in Buffalo is in the process of completely reversing itself. Don't cross the streams!!

Every other camera on the market in the price range I was looking at has 3x optical zoom at best, so no I'm not being facetious. 10x must mean that camera has a pretty kickass lens.

If it`s any help at all, i have the Canon PS A70. Very happy with it. A year or so old now and only 3.2 mp, so i would assume the A95 is a few generations up.

I've got a Fuji S5000 with 10x optical, which is a couple of years old, so don't accept anything less.
A personal thing here is that anything you buy is going to be redundant on the day of purchase so you could look at the cameras that use interchangeable optical lenses. Previously I had a smaller Fuji and I can't re-use anything - memory cards included. Go for the most generic stuff that won't involve you re-investing in a complete camera every few years. Separate the lens from the case and you won't go wrong.
My thoughts. Any comments?

I got the A85, which is 4Mp, and it is a superb camera. I heard the A75 was good also, so I guess the A95 maybe worth a look. Canon are good in general for cameras.
