imagine, if you will, an 'anything goes' forum - everything permitted: naughty words, obscene jokes, cheating accusation, insults - no moderation. entry restricted to those declaring themselves to be 18 or over of course. the question is: would this general forum soon be a 'ghost forum', inhabited by a few souls who really need these restrictions. or would most posters prefer to abide by the rules that have evolved here, and remain in the general forum? this kind of assumes that people would largely choose one or the other, not both...

I think it was called forumwars.

yeah but that was set up by cribs to spite the administrators in return for his forum ban, and some people may have chosen to ignore FW for that reason - i know i did. imho, which i have posted elsewhere, FW users were played by cribs for his own political purposes.

anyway, in the FW case, i gather that most people who posted there continued to post here as well - even the esteemed cribs (under a number of pseudonyms).

i guess this is just idle speculation though - although it would settle the question of just how many people here really need the rules...

The first rule of forumwars is you do not talk about forumwars....

Hey that's strange I followed a link there from this site.

I also don't think the posters on that site were played, well not all of them. Some people just simply liked the idea of an unmoderated forum. I myself found it a place where I could freely share in my more artistic side without the cumbersome idea of playing around the mods.

Freedom of expression is a very powerful tool, and I'm sure different people weilded it for different reasons. I saw it as a tool for better displaying my love of art poetry and music. I also noticed that freedom of expression silences a fool for what he really is.

Let's take shavixmir's "shag a wallaby" post. Not fit for the rhp threads, but in itself a rather well written commentary on a very delicate subject. Without forumwars, and my call out therein, this piece of art would have been lost forever.

can i take that as a vote for the 'anything goes' forum?

ok, you went to FW for your own purposes, and if it happened to serves cribs' purposes at the same time, who is to say that you were played? fair enough.

as for the expression of love for poetry, art and music - do the mods really hit that stuff? i can see it happening in a discussion of the artistic merits of WS Burroughs novels, Robert Mapplethorpe photos or John Holmes' acting abilities, but i've never seen discussion of those topics here. hmm, perhaps they were modded before i saw them. bring on the anything goes forum!!!!

ok, in response to the recently added 'shag a wallaby' bit: sure i can see how you might have wanted to go to another forum so as to be able to read this, given it would have been modded here, so i agree that FW was perhaps supplying a demand. but maybe that's just the reason to have an unmodded anything goes forum here...

against-i like a moderated forum. it stops things getting out of hand. plus, i wince every time i see a sweard word. i'm weird like that...😛 but maybe that's just cause it's a moderated forum. but yeah-that was, IMO, one of the major problems with the GK forums. it also lowers the tone of the site-from semi-mature to, well, yeah...

Would having an unoffical unmoderated forum really hurt your delicate sensibilities? Did Forumwars?

But you say you're a Gunners fan. What do you do when you're listening to Appetite for Destruction and "It's So Easy" comes on?

I can hear it now, the wicked bass line that starts the song off, into that faux-locomotive guitar sound, and then... Duh-Nuh-Nuh-Nuh-Nuh I see your sister in her Sunday dress!

Anyways, you know the part at the end of the song - You think you're so cool? Why don't you just.... At this point of the song, what do you do? Plug your ears? Turn it down?

I'm just curious...

Scribs made FW to be unmoderated... and it fell in on it's self. He was looking for the freedom to say and do as you please... not realizing there are things that SHOULD be removed from a healthy forum. It's fine when you have intelligent users speaking free, but next comes bigots and idiots that just flood with hate and stupidity. I think what he really wanted to do was remove these users, as they 'retarded' a good thing... but he knew he would be a hypocrite if he did so.

Thus, he closed it down and called it a success. It failed in my mind.

well, that's hit the nail on the head i think. you might want to engage in some sort of valid discussion about art or music or whatever or make some sort of social comment that involves adult concepts and language - but when you tear all the rules down, you find that you've opened the door to racist spudboys and other undesirables. so what is the solution?

how about this: keep the general forum, for those who don't want to be exposed to more xtreme stuff. have XHP as well - entry is on condition that you know that there might be the odd naughty word/topic inside. also, entry is for subscribers only, so some sort of ownership of the site is involved, to discourage people just casually trying to disrupt the forum.
here's the thing: instead of no moderation, EVERYONE can modify, but:
1. moderated stuff gets sent to a holding area initially, for say three days. in the meantime, it is available for viewing, and can be reinstated.
2. the author of any mod action - deletion, editing, reinstatement etc - is identified.

this would make the forum into more of a wiki thing - see www.wikipedia.org for something that operates along somewhat similar lines...
so the community as a whole should come to some sort of mod equilibrium evolved by itself...

The problem is that a lot of the subscribers here are pretty nuts too. Imagine some of these people without mods! This place is like a frigging psychiatric institute already.

Not surprisingly, I said more than a few things at Forum Wars that were probably best unsaid. I liked going there to swear and to catch up on gossip though...
