well, that's hit the nail on the head i think. you might want to engage in some sort of valid discussion about art or music or whatever or make some sort of social comment that involves adult concepts and language - but when you tear all the rules down, you find that you've opened the door to racist spudboys and other undesirables. so what is the solution? ...[text shortened]... ..
so the community as a whole should come to some sort of mod equilibrium evolved by itself...
The first thing that should go is robomod (whoever or whatever that is). Auto-scanning forums for content is generalising certain words. A word is and cannot be "bad".
The use of a word can be bad though. But the use of any word can be bad, so removing certain words won't keep out racism, bigotry or whatever.
The second thing that should happen is that the moderators make a covenant of what can and what cannot be said. Just to make sure they're all on one line. This saves agony later on.
The third thing that would make the forum better is that quotes from films, poetry, stories, etc. should not be moderated.
The fourth thing that comes to mind is that the moderators should moderate on intent.
If I'm constantly writing "Fcuk this" and "fcuk that", then sure, go ahead, remove it.
If however I've written an incredibley sensitive article and I use the F word to emphasise an important point, then it should not be moderated.
Obviously this lands you into the realm of subjectivity. That's why point number 2 is so important.
An example is the "fcuk this" I just wrote. It is wholly acceptable as the example fits the argument I'm putting down. It's just plain stupid I have to misspell it.

Creating an anything goes forum will not solve anything. Fix what we've got. That's what I say.

When did you see your first R-rated movie, Phlab?
The age was 13
The movie was Sharky's Machine. You might remember the oral sex sceen? Anyway... I blushed, and was very uncomfortable.
Anyway, it doesn't mater when I saw my first R rated movie.. It maters what the parents of 13 year olds want their kids to see. What's good for one 13 year old is not good for every 13 year old.

Used well they are just another word. But the attitude of posts is what needs to be moderated: the continual spite, verging on hate; the toleration of forum spamming and personal vendettas that wreck multitudes of threads.
... I like a moderated forum. it stops things getting out of hand ... one of the major problems with the GK forums. it also lowers the tone of the site-from semi-mature to, well, yeah...
I'm sick of it, which is why I'm now down to 1 game left to play and have stopped my subscription. I'm also sick of folk moaning and doing nothing, which is why I'm taking such action and going away for a while. As has often been pointed out, RHP is a business so unless there's a business reason to modify the moderation policy, it won't happen.
For those who want a "post anything" policy, fair enough. I won't pay for it though, neither financially nor figuratively. I'm not asking you to pay for my take on moderation either. It will be up to Russ to decide just how many new punters free reign pulls in, how many it drives away and so on.

But you say you're a Gunners fan. What do you do when you're listening to Appetite for Destruction and "It's So Easy" comes on?
I can hear it now, the wicked bass line that starts the song off, into that faux-locomotive guitar sound, and then... Duh-Nuh-Nuh-Nuh-Nuh I see your sister in her Sunday dress!
Anyways, you know the part at the end of ...[text shortened]... this point of the song, what do you do? Plug your ears? Turn it down?
I'm just curious...

I couldn't care less about age ratings.
I can quote some very strong language from some of the best literature in the world.
Are 12 year olds not allowed to read that either, I wonder?
but no, it should not be available to them in a public forum like this - it takes the choice away from parents who might be happy to have their kids play chess on the net, but also want to shield them from certain material until they have the emotional maturity to deal with it. i wouldn't give The Naked Lunch to a 12yo to read, for example.
let's remember this is primarily a chess site. there's no real need for an anything goes forum, unless enough people here want it. even without it, we can still play chess, which is the raison d'etre of the site.
i'm happy enough to have XHP, but what we have at the moment should remain available for kids and those who choose not to be exposed to the naughty bits.
