The true story is interesting. Annie was invited to a sharp shooting contest and met Frank Butler a very famous sharp shooter and beat him. They fell in love and got married in 1876 Annie was 16, Frank 19. They stayed together and died within weeks of each other in 1926. Frank died last, his cause of death was suicide by starvation.

A bullet in the head would have been faster, no hunger pains. (69) would have been considered old back then I believe.

People didn't seem to live to get very old back in 1800's. Around 50-60 or so it seems, maybe that is why 50 is considered old by some people in todays world, although I see that is changing and considered to be young by most people.
