I need something to get myself up off the couch, being in between jobs is rotting my self esteem. Suggestions on ways of getting my impetus back.
I should become a motivational speaker or counselor. I'm too good not to get paid for this advice.

Third, the cause lies in wrong decisions in the past. Fourth, stop dead in your tracks. Turn around a full 180. Now haul arse all the way back to the fork in the road, at which you casually chose the wrong turn years ago. Move out on the high road. Let the devil take the hind part and don't look back. Fifth, make a long list today of everything for which you, your family and friends are thankful. Save it. "Faithful are the wounds of a friend." -Proverbs 27:6.

Pretty much.
I think the funk people experience in between jobs is a tough one, and very common. You need to dedicate yourself to at least one activity outside the house each day.
Bum.

I'm not good at interwebz acronyms but I giggle at this post because I know how Starboob will react.
Thanks!

Maybe take over more of your wife's load of household chores, like do the shopping, the laundry, maybe some cooking, whatever you don't normally do. Doing the shopping will actually get you out of the house, too.
Maybe write down all the fix-it jobs you've been meaning to do around the house, from small stuff (replace the light in that seldom-used closet) to some bigger ones (painting a room, maybe). Then actually do some of them.
Your wife will love you for this (I'm sure she already does, but more sparkle in her eye is always good).

... and underestimating a guy who's seriously hurting (in the process).
I think Starrman's inherent laziness is being grossly underestimated by many of the above posters. If the solution does not involve easy money, drugs, sex or other immediate payouts then he'll stay on his couch until someone lights it on fire.
Right now, in his current frame of mind, if Starrman was told that he could make 20 quid by drawing a happy face on an empty box and carrying it from his house/apartment to the street corner he wouldn't do it.
