I'm probably showing my age AND geekiness but does anyone remember ARCHON? A game for the Apple II that was an animated chess match between light and dark forces. To capture a piece you had to fight on a battlefield and each piece had different attacks...

Anyone...anyone...

I loved that game, except I played it on the Commodore.. I used to be able to go through the complete opponents team with the unicorns on white, or the basilisks on black.. those were quick!

Me too. I never had a Spectrum version, I am quite sure it was the Amiga version I played to death.

I remember an old PC game from the 1980's, called Battlechess, which had much the same theme.
It was in the days even before VGA displays.
It ran in EGA with a mssive pallette of 4 whole colours!
There was a later, Windows version, called Battlechess 2000, but somehow it just wasn't the same.

for those that miss all these games, you can go to www.c64.com and download a c64 emulator, and the game Archon is there.. as well as all the other great commodore games.
