I suppose it depends upon the kind of comment too eg:

My new boss tells me I did well in a task that I was appointed to do.
My new boss tells me I’d look more confident in high heels.

On a Chess forum it is difficult to tell if you are being 'flattered' or someone is trying 'manipulate' you. I must admit I've been taken in a few times, so now take it all with at grain of salt as the old expression goes. Sometimes even out in the real world it is very difficult to tell if someone is being sincere or not. Sometimes it is obvious other times not so much.

I could feel flattered that a player has taken the time to switch between 5 different usernames to give them to me! 5 red thumbs within 15 minutes of a post is quite a record at around 05.30 UK time.

Not me. Flattery just serves to arouse my suspicion. A genuine complement is fine.

Your attitude to flattery is truly impressive.

Nice one .. 😀 Ok thanks ... that could be a genuine compliment. I tend to look down on people who are easily flattered. There are some derogatory names for it ... ditsy , airhead etc. People who are easily fooled with shallow compliments / flattery are really not thinking clearly, and quite often get led astray. So personally I dont flatter. If I say something complimentary you can be assured that I genuinely believe what I say and I have no ulterior motive.
