Does anyone else find it quite amazing that ark13 is 15 with a 1800 rating? Isn't 1800 Expert level? Very nice.

Is chess skill more learned or more natural? I feel like I could study for years and not reach that kind of play.

It doesn't surprise me at all. I've played an 8 year old who was 1600+ for my club. Ark's a nice guy and a good player, i have a game with him at the moment. The reason he's doing well is because he studies and takes his games seriously. 1800 is achievable by most people i feel, you don't need to be a prodigy for that kind of rating, just dedicated.

It doesn't really surprise me. In our school's chess club, there's an 8th grader who has an elo-rating of about 1900.
Also in the only chess tourney I ever took part in, it was very funny. German school system is different, you have primary school which is grade 1-4, and then you can go to a variety of schools. If you wanna be able to go to uni later on, you go to a gymnasium, which is grade 5-13. Anyways, it was a tourney for local gymnasiums. Our school's group was one 12thgrader (18, former local champion, he kicked everyone's butt), 2 11thgraders (16/17, one of which was me), a handful of 9th and 10th graders, one 8thgrader, a couple of 7thgraders nd one 6th grader. Well, we were all assembled there when in walked, like, these tiny little kids. They were 5thgraders (looked like 2ndgraders though...), and everybody was laughing at them and going "didn't know this was kindergarden...". One of them was like the 3rd best player in the entire tourney....
But it's an achievement, ark 😉

There are quite a few of these young talents on the site. Livinglegend for example, was rated above 2100 for a long time before getting timed out in many games. Schakuhr is another example.

Thanks guys, but like you said, I'm not really that impressive. Schakuhr's younger than me, and about 200 points stronger. (Though I might manage a draw against him. 😛) And I'm a pretty bad OTB player, so you wouldn't be too impressed if I told you that rating.

I'm turning 19 next month and hovering in the high 1900's right now. I have to say though, a year ago I probably would have been 1700 or below (if I had a stabilised rating back then). I've improved a large amount recently because I've gone from playing a game every fortnight to at least an hour every day.

i agree. in fact i speculate that a person with average intelligence could reach 2200 elo with just dedication and hard work, regardless of natural talent.

I disagree, 2200 is very strong, most people reach a point where they can't improve any more long before 2200. 2000 is perhaps achievable by most, there is a lot of study involved though.
