As We Get Closer to Celebrating Independence Day
As We Get Closer to Celebrating Independence Day Here are a few quotations I recently came across that are worthy of consideration as we get closer to July 4th. Three of these statements originate with a group commonly referred to as "Our Founders." It certainly behooves us to ponder their philosophies, which are still viable, though under fierce attack in the 2012, USA.
*"The sects that exist in the United States are innumerable, yet all sects preach the same moral law in the name of God." -Alexis de Tocqueville
*Let us with caution indulge the supposition that morality can be maintained without religion." -George Washington
*"Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other." -John Adams
*Can the liberties of a nation be thought secure when we have removed their only firm basis, a conviction in the minds of the people that these liberties are the gift of God?" -Thomas Jefferson
"A government with 99% of the popular support does not have the right to tell the remaining 1% that they must all become Republicans, vegetarians, or even Christians. If it does, then legitimate government has become tyrannical government, and the people have the right to oppose and replace it." -Dinesh D'Souza
* Fatal Sequence: “A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves largesse from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most benefits from the public treasury with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy, always followed by a dictatorship. The average age of the world's greatest civilizations has been 200 years. Great nations rise and fall. The people go from bondage to spiritual truth, to great courage, from courage to liberty, from liberty to abundance, from abundance to selfishness, from selfishness to complacency, from complacency to apathy, from apathy to dependence, from dependence back again to bondage.” -Alexander Tytler

"Lighthouses are more useful than churches" Benjamin Franklin
Adams signed the Treaty of Tripoli. Article 11 states
"The Government of the United States is not in any sense founded on the
Christian religion."
"There is not one redeeming feature in our superstition of Christianity. It has made one half the world fools, and the other half hypocrites." Thomas Jefferson
Some of the founding fathers were far from christian. It seems to me that people correlate USA with christianity by our founding fathers when it is really more of a recent movement.

Originally posted by SwissGambitNo problem. Around this time of year, I enjoy reflecting on the sacrifices that people made to make us an independant nation, it always seems to get overrun with "God bless America" junk. We made our own past, and we make our own future. We are not perfect, but we have our attributes as well. The founding fathers (I think) would be very sad with what we have become today.
This was refreshing to read. Thanks.

Consider the alternative. Founding Fathers were well aware that restricting liberty and individual freedom to any single religion, sect, order or brotherhood of initiates would, ipso facto, mean that departure to specifically embrace, Mulim, Hindu, Ortodox Jewish, Mormon, Catholicism, Mormonism, Atheism, Christianity or any other forms of manmade worhip availaable on the market would instantly confer upon the guilty individual criminal status. Please grasp the principle that human volition and self determination trump any belief system on the market. See you in August. In the meanwhile, fight the good fight and keep on resisting the temptation to get subjective. -gb

I agree 100% that human volition and self-determination trump any belief system on the market. [I bet the person you responded to does as well, though I can't speak for him.] I wish more religious people agreed.

Then, what is it?
