Just got asked for ID when trying to buy some alcohol. I don't actually carry any photo ID on me (out of date passport aside, I don't have any). What's an appropriate reaction?

*Shopkeepers responds in front of large queue forming behind you* Well I just asked for some ID so it should be obvious from your pimply complexion and youthful looks that you do look like you need some ID.
Now you look stupid so
*Your reply as you try to keep and look cool and grown up, while your face gets redder and redder* Well I don't carry any ID as I am old enough so there. A smug grin appears on your face.

When I was 18 I asked to buy a bottle of whiskey and the proprietor laughed at me and said I had to prove my age. After a bit of arguing he said if I could prove it he would give me the bottle for free - so confident he was - haha.
So I went and got my passport and then back to the shop and, fair play to him, he gave me the bottle.

I remember I was staying with a friend in Bournemouth, me 21 at the time and she 25, one winter and we drove out to the new forest. There was snow on the roads and we went into Tesco to get some de-icer (legal age 16 to buy because of solvent abusers) and got id'd! So 5 years and 9 years out by the shop assistant! Then if that wasn't enough, stopped a ...[text shortened]... again! Which was even more silly considering people are supposed to be at least 17 to drive.
