I'll start by a fairly obvious admission: I'm a grumpy old man (figuratively speaking), so I expect this thread will only be of interest to those in touch with their "grumpy old man" side. And not even half of them to be honest.

But anyway, enough preamble (itself a good source of grumpyness):

Of late, one of my grumpy quirks has been irritation at flashing things on my browser screen: most obviously adverts but also some animated avatars here on RHP.

There are avatars that move a little (often cute) and the Cheshire Cat's which is basically very cool. And then there are avatars exhibiting extreme movement, flashing, colour changes and so on. A veritible distraction to my poor RSI-strained eyes.

Now its not for me to tell people what to animate or how much. But it can be up to me whether I see it...

In Internet Explorer, select Tools | Internet Options | Advanced
In there is a bunch of "Multmedia" options: disable "play animations" and Bingo: the flashing stops. The avatars become simple pictures of their first image; nice and calm. Restful. Lovely.

Better yet ....

AdBlock (mozilla, firefox) can block arbitrary images from loading to begin with. More and more I'm knocking people's avatars off my screen as they get too distracting.

I even use it to block a few RHP images (actually, I use chessatwork.com) - notably the image in the top left corner - to keep my screen a little more compact.

Just hit the 'escape' key in IE to freeze all animated GIFS on a page.

Well, I guess I won't bother to put Schizzler back up... since it won't bother Toe to see it's flashing, spinning colors!

I did do the animation on Chess Cat's avatar... I think it's pretty cool too! He sent the base pic... and I had to make it vanish, only make sense!

Wib's avatar is neat... I can almost make out what it is saying..... almost.

If you time it just right, Phlab's avatar becomes invisible. Cool!

If only there was a grumpy 'smiley' I'd recommend that chap.
Made perfect sense to me.

P- (can't be bothered writing it all out) is right...it's not funny. No more spinning letters...

What is Wib's avatar saying, anyway?

Yes, and thank you again. I love my cat 🙂 The only thing I don't like about the escape key option is that you can't see my star spinning anymore. 😛

Russ, Do you know what my next star is going to be yet?
