My lower back is killing me. And I fear it might go into ischias yet again, as I could experience little over a year ago. I couldn't walk without pain for months. i fear this might happen again.

Any advice how to reduce back aches and still keep on living and working at the same time?

I will be taking a shower to see if that helps a bit. And I might take a stroll later this evening. Any other tips will receive free recs!

I use ice on my lower back before and after walks.

See a doctor about it... I got a list of exercises to do to keep my lower back strong. You'll want to check with the doctor first before getting this list, as not to injure yourself more.

I don't know if your problem is the same as mine, but my lower back muscle will spasm, causing me crippling pain. I usually take 800 mg of ibuprophin, and 800mg of aleve, put a heating pad on it, and take it easy. I also try not to lay down, as the doctor said it might agravate the problem. If it gets really bad, I take a muscle relaxer, and 150mg of oxycodone, and then I'm out like a light.

Yes, excercise is good. Like walking, and occasionally cycling does the trick. But today cycling might have increased the pain that was luring already.

Ice on my back sounds terrible. I think heat might be better. A warm shower helped a bit for now.

Most of my problems are with my right shoulder.
One of the things that I was advised on was "sleeping like a baby"....you know how they lie on their back with their arms relaxed above (or behind) their heads?
My normal "comfort" position is semi-foetal, so this was alien for me, and took some perseverance, but it definitely helped ...it seems I was also aiding breathing and blood circulation too, so it was good all round.

Hope it helps.

The ones I was doing involved a lot of laying on my back and doing leg and body lifts and cycle motions... some other stuff also. This was years ago, but the were special exercises to make that area of the back stronger.

The reason to see the doc first is you may need to heal up first before starting exercises like these.

Yes, for sure, good point Phlab....the Doc must be the Start / Go point....don't dive into whatever is espoused here....it could just as likely have an adverse effect on your own condition.

For example, mine referred me to a chiropractor who bent me and shaped me over many sessions...whilst they helped at the time, the effects (for me anyway) wore off after several hours...however, such ministrations may be exactly right for you.

Practice Tae Kwon Do side kicks. I'm serious. They work certain lower back muscles I can't work any other way and really get in there where my lower back pain is. Back kicks help too.

You don't need a combat worthy kick. Support yourself against a wall and kick at knee or thigh level if you have to and work your way up. The higher you go the better it works those muscles since they are the ones lifting your leg.

The pain of physical ailments is largely caused by inflamation (not news). Using heat increases inflamation. Heat expands - cold shrinks.

Taking advice from unknowns who have no medical experience is not smart. Obvious first step is the Dr. - if it is serious you need to know ASAP. ruptured disc, etc - anything affecting your nerves. Long term nerve damage may not come back.

But heat? Have you happened to keep track enough to find out the pain is worse within 6-12 hours of any heat? Ice it hard. I use blue ice with only a thin T shirt between skin and ice. Beats any painkillers - totally dependable. That, mild excercise, core strengthening, and light stretching has turned my terrible back into one that has no pain whatsoever. But I went to the Dr first.

Impossible, unless you love your job.

Lay on the floor, with your butt up against the couch, legs up at a 90 degree angle, bent at knees over the couch. Try to lay flat with your head on floor, you'll probably need to start with a pillow at first and work into it. It straightens out your spine/shoulders, etc., and it sounds easy, but if you have any curvature, it will straighten out your spine/neck, and the pain is excruciating with your head flat on floor. Eventually try to work up to 30 minutes a day and it should set you straight, it worked for me.

Many back problems are caused by a mis-match of muscles. The problem could be with your abdominals. There are very small muscles located just above your pubic bone. In many people these muscles remain under developed. When back pain starts people will exercise their back and neglect the muscles in their abs creating an imbalance. A exercise that works for some is to sit cross legged on a pillow or exercise pad and lean back until you feel like you are tipping over then flex those lower abdominal muscles to keep you upright.

I've had back problem for ages following a sports injury.
My advice is speak to a doctor and a physiotherapists.
I found using ibuprofen and paracetamol effective for pain relief and co codamol when the pain meant i couldn't move.
I tried all kinds of sprays-deep heat, ice freeze ect. They're no good. Applying ice does work.
Try and keep active. Avoid any exercise that puts the back under too much pressure like running and lifting heavy weights. Swimming is a good activity but be careful when doing breast stroke as arching the back will cause spasm.
Good luck
