Sonic Youth >> Pixies >> Nirvana
In order of appearance.
Sonic Youth formed 1981 and basically credited with influencing everyone with their more free form and noisy style than their contemporaries, such as REM. Lists Velvet Underground and The Stooges as major influences, along with the genral post punk wave of music. I can't comment much more as i have little Sonic Youth.
Pixies formed 1986 with major work Dolittle released in 1989. They meld alternative ideas with pop hooks and melodies to make a somewhat out of control sound. They are credited with opening eyes in the popular music world to alternative music, although they were avoided by music TV and by radio somewhat.
Nirvarna were formed only a year later in 1987 but didn't release anything till 1989 and breakthrough work Nevermind was released in 1991. This album did what the Pixies didn't and really broke through into the mainsteam, selling millions. Their sound took the noisey, fierce sounds of Sonic Youth (amonst others) and the pop riffs and melodies brought into alternative by Pixies (again, amonst others).
This is obviously unbelieveably over simplified as there are so many bands involved in all these things and, as ever, if you keep digging you will probably just end up at Mozart or African spirituals or something.

And why the hell are you talking about Pixies, Nirvana and Sonic Youth then? You think they suck?
( I haven't talked about those bands, others have, and yes, I think they suck. But that would be in a thread titled," Bands That suck, That You Think Suck." 😛 )
