Is it possible to pay money into a UK bank account from on the continent. If so, how is this done?

On the premise that you can generally pay money into your account from any branch of your bank, I'd say you could just as long as your bank has European branches,

EDIT: And being an Englishman in a foreign country, you'd do it by going up to the counter completely ignoring their language and speaking broken English VERY slowly and VERY loudly.

Yes you can mate, all you have to do is have a paypal account and you can send your money all around the world (for a small fee) as long as the recipient has an email address.

Hope this helps, please refer to www.paypal.com

Thanks, but I was more thinking of paying money into my own bank account (cash) from abroad. I do have a paypal account, but the only way to pay funds into it is to pay cash into a bank here.

I take it you will be getting the cash when you are abroad then??

Could you possibly inquire on getting a bank account before you go abroad then transfer it across?? You may want to get an HSBC account, I think they operate almost everywhere in the world so might be able to do it that way.

That's handy to know about HSBC. I'll look into it, Thankyou. πŸ™‚

Bowmann Tip #17(x)

Banks are bad news. Put all your money in stocks and shares.

http://moneybookers.com is the way to go. the cheapest international money transfer available on the planet by far.
to do it from outside your own country. this is how to proceed.
firstly, you will need to have an account in the country you are in now. from that account upload money to yourself, then download it to your own bank account in your other (home in your case) country. total cost is miniscule including the hidden exchange rate slam if any .
***NB***: when it asks you where you are now in the initial sign up, it is important to say/write the country you want to upload the money from, NOT necessarily the country where you are physically in. you can only change address every three mounth and only have ONE account which HAS to be in your full name exactly as on your bank account(s).

you can have other moneybookers accounts but they somewhat useless unless they are verified by your full name from an financial transaction.

you may also find that you need the latest firefox browser to be certain of the security

No. And I suppose you aren't aware of the stock market's performance over the past hundred years.

I live and work in Japan. I have a Post office account here. I pay in all my excess cash every month. It's a Japanese account, and I pay in Japanese yen. I have a book, so if I want to take money out of the account, I use the book. I was sent a card when I opened the account, and I sent it to my mother. I tell her how much, and she withdraws money every month, in GB pounds Sterling from any bank ATM (not a private ATM), and pays it into my UK savings account.

The cost of her taking the cash out of my post office account is 125 Yen (about 75p). The cost of her using a high street bank or post office ATM is nothing (except Lloyds TSB, who charge a quid fifty, the robbing basterds...).
The exchange rate is SELLING rate, not BUYING.

If I transfer cash or pay into an account in the UK from here, it would cost a minimum of 12 quid, plus commission, and the transaction would use the BUYING rate, not the SELLING rate.

Question 1: Do you only want to save money?
Question 2: Do you trust your mother?

I work for HSBC.

You could open an account at your local branch then, assuming that the country to which you are travelling has a(n) HSBC, instruct the bank official to complete a group identification form. This form detailing your ID and VA (verification of address) can be sent to the foreign branch.

Please note though as all countries have retained their own banking legislation you cannot simply lodge cash in a foreign country directly into your UK account. You must do a telegraphic transfer ('Priority Payment'πŸ˜‰. There will be a charge. Currently, HSBC charges its customers £10 for this service, per transaction.

Other services, via the Postal route, may be more cost efficient.

I hope this helps.
