Hurt as I am that you didn't consider me as a possible candidate I will still answer the question 😉
Morphy was the best ever.
For more modern players it gets tougher.Fischer maybe, but certainly Kasparov too and let's not forget Botvinnik. It's impossible to choose between players from different era's.No way to accuratly compare them.

I don't know enough about chess to make a reasoned judegment, but of the few people whose games I have seen and played through I admire Wilhelm Steinitz.

well if you really want to know who the best player is it's me.lol. actually i think it could be any one, there's people out there that don't play chess competitively like we do. i know theres someone unfound out there that is greater then anyone we've ever seen.

... and people are always forgetting Botwinnik, because he wasn't a spectacular man but he was a giant in chess and influenced the game enormously. I once had the opportunity to go and listen to one of his lectures on the subject of Artificial Intelligence. Great !

what's happened to all these "GM's at 11!" people? i know fischer was the youngest at his time (16), and a few years ago there was an 8 year old or something ridiculus like that becoming a GM-but this 8 year old broke a record of someone younger than fischer...but what happened to all these protegies?...
