...since the 70's Dan? There's a few oldies in there!

For me:
Shilton,
Parker, M.Wright, Terry, Pearce,
Beckham, Currie, Robson, Gazza,
Keegan, Lineker

subs: Owen, Waddle, Beardsley, Rooney, Adams.

Very difficult... left loads of players out.. Colin Bell for instance... and the best centre-forward England 'never' had - Stan Collymore... so much potential left unfullfilled...

No Bobby Charlton in that first team?

no such thing ever existed
Used as a superlative, 'best' doesn't necessarily mean 'good'. 😛

why is rooney in that team?
very unfair... I support spurs not man U. But the guy is only 20y old. he is already a true world class player.

Reminds me of the maradona from the 1980s. Ok .. he is not that good, but sometimes... when he hits form Rooney is just head and shoulders above anyone in the world.

When he hits form he's as good as many of the top players in the game who are at that level more consistently.

Zidane
Ronaldinho
Gerrard
Kaka

etc

This is just a bit of fun.. At 1970 my team would stand.. except Greaves and Matthews though out for a few years I'd put those two on the sub bench they had more talent in one toe than any England player since 70.
Banks was still the best until his car accident and Shilton has said it many many times.
Stiles, Moore and Hurst were awesome into the early 70's and the likes of Eusebeo and Pele would tell you Stiles was the best left defender ever to play for England he didn't finish until 72 (I think). I would love to have seen moore delivering quality ball to Keegan... Bobby C had to be in there.. I watched him score for Man U against Real to get the European Cup when it was a real prize..amazing man brilliant lifter of spirits and discipline in true sportsmanship..and no one could hit the ball sweeter before or since.

Rooney, like Owen, will fade into oblivion.

He is just the flavour of the week for the English hordes who believe that England is the best team in the world.

They need someone to idolise and that someone is Rooney at the moment.

Previous players who had this honour include:

Owen (Now a half wit playing at Newcastle, who could never catch game at Real... Fair enough he had / has serious injury problems, but hardly a world beater)

Beckham (Now a half wit playing at Real Madrid who has conclusively proved how overrated he is, in no small part thanks to the English media that built him up to be a God when all he could ever do was cross the ball and hit a free kick)

Alan Shearer (In my opinion, the only English player deserving of the heaps of praise bestowed upon him. He was great and it's unfortunate he never played for a 'big' team)

Take the best English 11 of all time, and compare them to the best Brazilian / Italian / Dutch / Argentine 11 of all time and England would be NOWHERE.

Just like they are currently

You're talking out of your backside ASROMA... a sweeping statement with nothing to back it up.

England are currently 5th in the FIFA rankings - hardly nowhere?

well Owen ..scored a bag full of goals at REAL even if he was not picked in the starting 11.

I have never been a fan of beckham and agree with you.

Shearer... again not one of my all time greats as an internation, but as a league player was fantastic... his goal scoring record is un-beleiveable

Don't ask :'(

Think Terry is a great club player but he's yet to convince me at international level.
